Two Seahawk swimmers headed to states
Seahawks Emma Pearce and Evy Case have both qualified to swim at the state championship meets, Feb. 15 at Bowdoin College for girls. The boys championships are Feb. 16.
Swimmers can compete in a maximum of two events. Pearce qualified in two, the 200-yard freestyle and the 500-yard freestyle. Case qualified in seven out of eight events, and now has to choose.
“I'll definitely be swimming the 200 IM,” Case said at the Seahawks’ last home meet on Jan. 28. “I'd probably seed higher in the 100 butterfly, but I'd rather do the 100 backstroke.”
At their last meet, Case qualified for the 50-yard freestyle, coming in first with a time of 28.75 seconds. She also placed first in the 100-yard butterfly. The other first place finisher was Samantha Carter in the 100-yard breaststroke.
A second went to the girls 200-yard freestyle relay team. Coming in third were the girls 200-yard medley relay team, Carter in the 200-yard freestyle and Pearce in the 200-yard IM and 100-yard freestyle. Fifths were picked up by Molly Thibault in the 200-yard freestyle and 100-yard backstroke, and sixth places went to Genevieve Taylor in the 50-yard freestyle and 100-yard backstroke and Chelsie Graves in the 100-yard breaststroke.
The Seahawks had a good season despite only having seven swimmers. Seniors Carter and Taylor were both honored at the last meet. Coach Don Strout praised their performance this year and congratulated them on their hard work and dedication.
