This week at The Harbor Theatre: ‘Belle,’ ‘Maleficent’
Maleficent is the extremely powerful, evil fairy in Disney's 1959 animated feature, “Sleeping Beauty.” The character returns in 2014, played by Angelina Jolie in Disney's “Maleficent” a fairy-tale fantasy film providing the fairy's “back story.”
“Maleficent” is rated PG, also stars Elle Fanning, Sharlto Copley, Sam Riley, Imelda Staunton, Juno Temple, and Lesley Manville. It plays through Thursday, June 12 at 7 p.m.
The movie “Belle,” was inspired by the true story of Dido Elizabeth Belle ( Gugu Mbatha-Raw), the illegitimate mixed race daughter of Admiral Sir John Lindsay (Matthew Goode). Raised by her aristocratic great-uncle Lord Mansfield (Tom Wilkinson) and his wife (Emily Watson), Belle's lineage affords her certain privileges, yet her status prevents her from the traditions of noble social standing. While her cousin Elizabeth (Sarah Gadon) chases suitors for marriage, Belle is left on the sidelines wondering if she will ever find love. After meeting an idealistic young vicar's son bent on changing society, he and Belle help shape Lord Mansfield's role as Lord Chief Justice to end slavery in England.
The Arizona Republic calls “Belle” a “beautiful period piece, but it’s also something more: a study of racism, classism and sexism in 18th-century England.”
Roger Moore writing for Movie Nation describes Belle as “beautifully cast, touchingly played and handsomely mounted ... as close to perfect as any costumed romance has a right to be.”
“Belle” is rated PG and plays Friday, June 13 through Tuesday, June 17 at 7 p.m. with a Sunday matinee on June 15 at 3 p.m.
Coming soon to the silver screen: “Chef,” directed, co-produced, written by, and starring Jon Favreau with Robert Downey, Jr., Scarlett Johansson, Sofía Vergara, Dustin Hoffman, Oliver Platt and John Leguizamo.
