This week at The Harbor Theatre
“The Hundred Foot Journey” is the story of Hassan Kadam and his family, led by Papa, who move to a quaint village in the South of France with the grand plan of opening an Indian restaurant in the picturesque countryside. They are undeterred by the fact that only 100 feet opposite stands a Michelin starred classical French eatery. Outraged by the new arrivals, Madame Mallory (Helen Mirren) is determined to have their business shut down.
As cultures clash and food flies, an all-out war escalates between the two establishments — until, that is, Hassan's passion and talent for French cuisine begin to enchant Madame Mallory and even she can't deny this young chef could have what it takes to garner even more acclaim for her beloved restaurant.
“The Hundred Foot Journey” is rated PG. It plays Wednesday, Sept. 17 and Thursday, Sept. 18 at 7 p.m.
“The Trip To Italy” is Michael Winterbottom's sequel to “The Trip,” a largely improvised 2010 film, that took comedians Steve Coogan and Rob Brydon (or semi-fictionalized versions of themselves) on a restaurant tour around northern England. Now they're back, touring restaurants in Italy: Tuscany, Rome, Amalfi and ending in Capri.
In this witty and incisive follow-up, Winterbottom reunites the pair for a new culinary road trip, retracing the steps of the Romantic poets' grand tour of Italy and indulging in some sparkling banter and impersonation-offs. The characters enjoy mouthwatering meals in gorgeous settings from Liguria to Capri while riffing on subjects as varied as Batman's vocal register, the artistic merits of "Jagged Little Pill," and, of course, the virtue of sequels.
Winterbottom trains his camera to capture the idyllic Italian landscape and the gastronomic treasures being prepared and consumed while keeping the film centered on the crackling chemistry between the two leads.
“The Trip to Italy” effortlessly melds the brilliant comic interplay between Coogan and Brydon into quieter moments of self-reflection, letting audiences into their insightful ruminations on the nuances of friendship and the juggling of family and career.
“The Trip To Italy” (not rated) plays at 7 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 19 and Saturday, Sept. 20 at 7 p.m., and Wednesday, Sept. 24 and Thursday, Sept. 25. On Sunday, Sept. 21 at 3 and 7 p.m. Coming Oct. 2 and 3: Buster Keaton classics with the Andrew Alden Ensemble
