Wildcats lose Busline championship game
The Busline seventh grade basketball championship game followed a familiar pattern for Boothbay Region and Medomak middle schools. For the third time this season, Medomak eked out a narrow victory over Boothbay.
In the previous two games, the River Hawks won games by two- and three-point margins.
On Jan. 29, Medomak dashed Boothbay’s championship hopes when Sadie Cohen made two free throws with four seconds remaining to break a 24-24 tie. Boothbay missed a last second, three-point attempt to win the game.
Medomak won both the regular season and tournament championships.
Cohen led all scorers with 16 points. She propelled the River Hawks to victory by making four free throws in the fourth quarter. Medomak Middle School won, 26-24, at the tournament championship game held at Boothbay Region Elementary school.
Boothbay Region coach John Deetjen congratulated both teams for a marvelous championship game.
“Somebody’s got to win and somebody’s got to lose,” Deetjen said. “It was a well-played game and our team has nothing to be ashamed of. I want to congratulate both teams for a truly outstanding effort.”
Boothbay Region took an 8-2 lead midway through the first quarter. Boothbay Region maintained the lead until the fourth quarter. Medomak gained its first lead after Kayla Donlin scored off an offensive rebound to give the River Hawks a 23-22 lead with 5:18 remaining.
Boothbay Region regained the lead when Josey Smith hit an eight-foot jump shot with 90 seconds left. Medomak tied with score with a Cohen free throw with 30 seconds remaining.
Boothbay Region’s leading scorer was Katie Larsen with 11 and Josey Smith had five. Other Wildcat scorers were Chloe Arsenault, 2; Glory Blethen, 2; and Madison Faulkingham, 2.
Boothbay Region finished the season with an 11-3 record.
