The Y-Arts Lottery: So they can fly!
When you purchase a Y-Arts $10,000 Lottery ticket, you buy a chance at a nice chunk of change for yourself, but you also help the Y-Arts kids so they can fly! They can fly! They can fly (you are thinking Peter Pan, now, right?) … all the way to Atlanta in 2017 for the Junior Theater Festival.
Tickets are $100 each. Buy individually or as a group — perhaps the gang at the office wants to pitch in $10, $20 each?
This lottery was first held as a Y-Arts fundraiser in 2011 to help defray airfare and hotel costs, and a team excursion in Atlanta for the entire group. For the 2017 trip there will be 29 kids ready to perform, take workshops, meet kids from all over the country who love musical theater, and perform in the annual competition held at the Cobb Galleria Center.
YMCA Arts & Humanities Director and Y-Arts Director Emily Mirabile says the biggest hurdle to overcome in attending the JTF is the cost, however, the confidence each member of the group gains makes the festival well worth it.
“Through the rehearsal process the kids learn to work as a team, how to be proud of others’ successes, and to sing and dance in a competitive setting,” Mirabile said. “Going to the festival also opens their eyes to the fact that there are so many other people who love what they love: to sing and dance and to have a good time!”
Stephanie Hawke of Hawke Motors purchased the very first ticket on April 5, but not for herself.
“I usually buy one every year for a non-profit in the region. I'm involved with Rebuilding Together and decided on that organization this year,” Hawke said. “I hope this encourages other businesses to buy a ticket (for a non-profit) as well!”
If all 300 tickets sell, there will be $20,000 for Y-Arts' expenses for next year's Junior Theater Festival. Tickets will be on sale until Aug. 19 — or while they last — when the drawing is held during a Y-Arts concert.
Tickets for the Y-Arts $10,000 Lottery are being sold at the front desk at the Boothbay Region YMCA and from members of Y-Arts — and, yes, including Director Mirabile.
Help them fly, help them fly, help them fly!
