Whale’s Tale and Carousel Marina make several improvements
We have been hard at work on the East side this winter! We knew we had a few things to do… We have built over 40 new docks which are now built to have the power lines underneath the boards to create a cleaner look and a safer environment for boaters. We also replaced six pilings on our most southern docks, where most of our yachts dock. We have switched over to Ethanol Free Gasoline on the gas dock! We are going to be the only marina in the region with Ethanol Free Gasoline, we will still… Read more
The colors, shapes and messages of imagination
For the 69th year, students in Boothbay Region schools are exhibiting their artwork from the past year at Boothbay Region Art Foundation – and it is quite a show. What makes it all the more remarkable is the art created by Boothbay Region Elementary School students, who were unable to return to school after February vacation due to flooding and the issues it created. Teachers had to pump up their creative sides as… Read more

Follow the Gleam
Thanks to Windjammer Days, a rich marine history and a community of sailing enthusiasts, Boothbay Harbor sees its fair share of beautiful boats. It is hard for a ship to stand out amid other stunning vessels. But whether due to its sleek lines, long history, or because the 86-year-old boat still wins races, the Gleam turns heads.
“Gleam’s presence in Boothbay Harbor is pretty special because she's not from here, and you don't see boats like that often here,” said… Read more
Sunken Garden: Peaceful spot near Wiscasset’s downtown
Sunken Garden, off Federal and Main streets in Wiscasset, has “a certain peacefulness about it,” Garden Club of Wiscasset’s Emily Adler said. Created in the early 1900s in the foundation of a burnt hotel, it is free for the public to step down into, away from a busy week and into the tranquility, said Adler and, interviewed separately, Terry Heller of the club and head of Wiscasset’s Appearance of the Town Committee.
“The Sunken Garden is a hidden jewel in the middle of the historic… Read more
At work in Boothbay Harbor: Assemblage artist André Benoit
Winding roads with picturesque views, and then a steep gravel drive, lead to artist André Benoit’s scenic studio property in Boothbay Harbor. It is a sunny spring day and he has just finished “Rub a dub dub,” a wood assemblage depicting three men in a tub, rowing against one another, spiraling and spinning.
His studio is a 30-foot x 30-foot two-story workshop packed with finished art, materials and tiny bits and pieces of scrap metal and furniture and antiques. To the naked eye, it… Read more

Fort Edgecomb standing guard over Sheepscot since 1809
Fort Edgecomb is a state historic site, but 215 years ago it served as an important defense post. During the Thomas Jefferson administration, hostilities between the U.S. and Great Britain were growing. The Crown and the burgeoning new nation were at odds over trade and commerce, Native American policy, and Britain’s seizing of American sailors for use in its navy. The Embargo Act of 1807 also closed American ports to foreign trade during the Napoleonic War between Great Britain and France… Read more

‘I’m bored!’ We’ve got some cures for that
Swim, swing, search ... ride, row, read … When the long summer days become a dilemma for parents who hear “I’m bored” more often than not from their kids, there are plenty of opportunities in the Boothbay and Wiscasset regions to engage the youngsters for a few hours a day … and get them away from their screen time.

Blake’s Boatyard: Family-owned for 70 years
At Blake’s Boatyard, the term “family business” could not be more fitting. For 70 years, it has been owned by members of the Blake family, starting with Fred Blake in 1951 through to current owners Amy – who is Fred’s granddaughter – and her husband Dusty Goodwin.
Amy’s grandparents, great-grandparents and extended family members have all worked at Blake’s. As she told the Register, “Growing up myself, my brother Tyler and cousins Aaron and Charlinda all worked here at various times… Read more
One man’s junk is another man’s treasure at Rotary’s Big Gray Barn
When you are handed lemons, you make lemonade. And this “lemonade stand” has been more fruitful than ever imagined.
In this case, the lemon was the pandemic. But Boothbay Harbor Rotary Club did not let COVID-19 sour the club’s enthusiasm or hard work after the 63rd annual August Auction in 2020 was canceled, as were a number of other main events in the region.
“The pandemic forced us to think and act differently, create new goals for socializing while social distancing and… Read more

Wiscasset’s 1807 Castle Tucker
Castle Tucker was Silas Lee’s dream house, on land he spent 15 years piecing together from “teeny” properties he bought up, owner Historic New England’s Midcoast Maine Site Manager Peggy Konitzky said.
So why is it not Castle Lee? Showing Boothbay Register/Wiscasset Newspaper around, Konitzky explained, for one thing, Lee called it Elm Lawn, for all the elms, which later died. The current name dates to early 20th century, when Jenny Tucker, daughter of Captain Richard and Mollie… Read more

September First Friday: New shows and a memorial
This month’s First Friday event took me to Gleason Fine Art’s opening reception for Andrea Peter’s new exhibition. Andrea is one of the most colorful, talented artists in the region. I asked Andrea, Dennis and Andrew how many openings she’s had since being represented there; her first show was 1999-ish so the consensus, although slightly vague, was fewer than 20 but close to 15!
The show, “Painting From the Heart,” features one of Andrea’s big paintings, a 48” x 48” one titled “Ready… Read more

James Montgomery ... live!
The first time I ever heard The James Montgomery Band was in ’77 or ’78 at the Silver Bullet in Moodus, Connecticut. It was a small club, but some of the best bands around played there including Max Creek, NRBQ, Fountainhead, Tirebiter … too many to recall for my aging brain. And you didn’t have to drive into the Hartford area to see them because of the Bullet. It was like Shaboo in Willimantic (which I’ve also written about), but smaller scale. Music sure was fine back then. Every weekend… Read more
