Maulolo in first place
When the dust settled over the 2012-2013 high school wrestling season, it was Antonio Maulolo standing at the top of the 220-pound weight class.
The Boothbay Region High School sophomore was able to pin his way to first place during the February 16 Class C state wrestling tournament in Augusta.
He pinned all three opponents he faced – Foxcroft Academy's Alex Sedore in the first round, Winslow's Sean Cote in the second round and Mt. View's Job Mesaric in the finals. Maulolo didn't waste any time either; he pinned Sedore at the five minute, 22 second mark, Cote at the one minute, 28 second mark and needed only 36 seconds to pin Mesaric and claim the 220-pound title.
Maulolo came in as the lowest ranked-wrestler in his class, but that was partly due to an injury he suffered during the regional match-ups. Cote and Mesaric had pinned Maulolo during the regional meet, but when the title on the line it was Maulolo who came out on top.
Boothbay's Howard Carter was pinned in his first match against Foxcroft Academy's Brandon Brock in the 182-pound class. Carter won his first consolation bout against Mattanawcook's Brent Pelkey but was knocked out in the second round of consolations.
Maulolo and Carter were the only wrestlers from Boothbay Region High School in the state tournament.
