Jessica Deshiro has been working her magic in the kitchen at Weatherbird in Damariscotta for around three years. If you’ve ever had a pastry or baked good from there, you know Deshiro knows what she’s doing in a kitchen.

Recently, she teamed up with Monica Janczewski-Carrington at Carrington’s shop, Beelicious, in Wiscasset. Deshiro’s baked items became an instant hit.

Now she has moved her business to Damariscotta’s Pine Grove Plaza, beside N.C. Hunt Lumber. She will be selling her delightful cupcakes, whoopie pies, Italian breads and cookies, fresh handmade pastas, biscotti, and other delectable sweets and savories, using fresh local ingredients whenever available. Birthday cakes will be made to order. Small cakes, and slices of cake, will be available on certain days.

The Italian influence is thanks to Deshiro’s grandmother, Mary Lou, or Mammy, as Deshiro calls her. Mammy taught her granddaughter to bake at an early age, and it has been Deshiro’s dream to own her own business ever since. “I’ve been getting my hands into dough since I was 4 or 5,” she said.

Deshiro’s fiance, Gabriel McCoy, when not in school studying accounting, is her right-hand man in the business. “And he’s a keeper,” Deshiro said with a laugh. “I’ll be helping her part time,” McCoy said. “She’s the brains behind the whole operation. I’m just the paperwork.”

McCoy said he’s her biggest fan. “I love her food. I have no complaints, but she knows if I have something to say, I’ll say it.”

Because Mammy is battling Alzheimer’s disease, Deshiro donates a part of her proceeds to the Alzheimer’s Foundation. “We try to bring awareness to the foundation and the disease one cupcake at a time,” she said.

The bakery at 767 Main St. will open May 1 at 8:30 a.m. After that, it will be open Thursday through Sunday, 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m., and Fridays 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Contact the bakery at 207-504-4104 or through Facebook and Etsy.
