Lady Seahawks fall to Flyers in Augusta
It looked like a scene straight out of last year’s Western Class C Semifinals as the Boothbay Region High School Lady Seahawks fell to the Waynflete Flyers February 21 for the second consecutive year at the Augusta Civic Center.
Despite a 73-52 score at the end of the game, the Lady Seahawks never gave up and fought hard for 32 minutes.
In the first quarter, Waynflete came out scoring as the Flyer's star point guard Martha Veroneau quickly racked up 12 points to gain a 22-11 lead.
Boothbay struggled to take care of the ball and to break the full court pressure imposed by Waynflete. On offense, Boothbay's impatience clashed with their intensity as they forced up shots and turned the ball over 13 times in the first half.
The Lady Seahawks entered the third quarter with confidence, as they broke Waynflete’s full court press and closed the gap to 11 points. Sarah Caron and Abby McLellan connected, getting clean shots off; however, any improvements on Boothbay’s part, doubled for Waynflete’s as Veroneau continued her offensive assault, making an 8-0 run while handing out assists to Leigh Fernandez and Rhiannan Jackson. Veroneau led all scorers with 31 points.
In the final frame, the Lady Seahawks executed down the stretch, as Alex Clarke scored 12 of her 19 points to lead Boothbay in scoring, but it was too little too late as Waynflete outscored Boothbay 37-20 in the final eight minutes.
It was one of Boothbay’s highest scoring games of the season, and even though Waynflete will advance to play Madison in the Western Class C Final, Boothbay’s energy, commitment, and good sportsmanship shown through, especially with senior captain Sarah Caron, as her vocal encouragement for her team continued long after the final buzzer sounded at the Augusta Civic Center.
