Battle for the bottom puts Seahawks on top of Wiscasset, 17-7
The Seahawks held their season’s final game at Wiscasset on Tuesday, May 29. Both teams at the bottom of their divisions had their coaches looking forward to next year.
“All 13 kids showed up for practice," said Wiscasset coach Greg Wood.
With nine freshman on the current team, Wood expected to see better times especially if the school takes on a Class D schedule next year.
“We should be able to compete,” said Wood.
Seahawk coach Ed Crocker has the opposite situation. He will lose seven senior starters including his star pitcher, Cameron Crocker.
Encouragement for next year came from brother Hunter Crocker who struck out 10 in the first five innings May 29.
The bats came alive for both teams.
The Seawhawks struck first when Hunter Crocker singled only to be erased when Steve Reny grounded and gained first on the fielder’s choice. Cameron Crocker then hit a long fly ball to center field that allowed him to round the bases with Reny in front of him. The inning finished with Jay Hasch reaching first on an error, stealing third and coming home on a single by Will Labrecque.
The Seahawks added four more runs in the third inning highlighted by a home run by Jacob Wilson.
Wiscasset’s Ronald Drake responded with a home run in the first inning. The team put a scare into the Seahawks in the fifth, scoring five runs.
Cameron Crocker entered in relief and finished out his final game as a Seahawk.
Boothbay scored seven times in the seventh inning to end the season on a high note, 17-7. The Seahawks' year ended with three wins against 13 losses.
