New Hampshire sailor wins J-80 championship
The J-80 sailboat class held its annual East Coast Championship race Aug. 24-26 hosted by the Boothbay Harbor Yacht Club. Sixteen boats competed in the three day event directed by area residents Ken Colburn and Jen Baker both of Southport.
The unquestioned winner was Les Beckwith from Wolfeboro, New Hampshire, who sailed a boat mysteriously named FKA finishing 2 points ahead of MORE GOSTOSA sailed by Kevin Hayes and crew also from The Winnipesaukee Yacht club. Third place was taken by a boat named LAWYERS GUNS AND MANGOS from the Annapolis, Maryland Yacht Club with Dan Shanahan at the helm. Fourth place was the top BHYC finisher SKY ROCKET owned and sailed by Craig and Madeline Preston of West Boothbay Harbor and London, England.

The Corinthian Award was given for the highest finishing boat with a completely Corinthian team. To be eligible for the Corinthian award, the boat’s entire crew is classified as a Category 1 sailor by World Sailing, and earned by UPSETTER skipper Jason Viseltear.
