Winslow wins Rotary girls tournament
Winslow Elite went 5-0 to win the 39th annual Rotary International junior high girls basketball tournament held March 8-10 at the Boothbay Region Elementary School and YMCA.
The Elite defeated Lincoln (Damariscotta) in the title game, 35-18, after Lincoln battled out of the losers' bracket to advance to the championship of the 12-team, double-elimination tournament. Lincoln (5-2) defeated Boothbay 7, 50-7, and Yarmouth, 26-23, before losing to Winslow, 37-29, on Friday and Saturday at BRES. On Sunday at the YMCA, Lincoln defeated Bath, 33-25; Yarmouth, 26-10; and Greely, 27-25.
The Elite, beside beating Lincoln twice, also defeated Oak Hill, 39-16; Medomak, 38-3; and Greely, 31-18.
The two Boothbay teams, Boothbay 8 and Boothbay 7, each lost their only two games. Boothbay 8 lost to Bath, 30-29, and Turner, 28-23. Boothbay 7 lost to Lincoln, 50-7, and Oceanside, 51-8.
Brie Wajer of Lincoln was named the tournament's most valuable player and a member of the all-tournament team. Wajer and teammate Bailey Plourde also won the Hot Shot contest; they edged Molly Chapin and Mira Train of Greely, 44-42.
Other players named to the all-tournament team were: Bailey Plourde, Lincoln; Cagney O'Brien, Boothbay 8; Heather Kervin and Paige Trask, Winslow; Abby Robertson, Turner; Mira Train and Molly Chapin, Greely; Brianna Mulherin, Oak Hill; Brooke Elman, Bath; Cory Largenbarn and Ally Tillotson, Yarmouth.
Boothbay 7 was awarded the Team Sportsmanship trophy.
Tournament directors Laurie Dickinson and Jason Lorrain wished to thank everyone who helped them in their first year of running the tournament.
