Boothbay twins match up with the best
Another year, another round of the Francis Piches Invitational Championships for the Spear twins.
Eleven-year-olds Ella and Simon Spear, both of Boothbay, qualified for Piches at Gunstock Mountain in Gilford, N.H., and both helped Maine take second overall in the multi-state competition. New Hampshire would take the top spot while New York finished in third place.
Racing for team Maine, the Spears, who both attend Carrabassett Valley Academy, were able to rack up solid finishes at the March 15-17 Piches.
But, the Piches are just one stop along a long and successful season for the U12 skiers.
“I got to the Piches by qualifying first in the state of Maine,” Ella Spears said in an email. “Then at the Piches I took home (a) sixth-place finish in New England in both the Ladies Slalom and Giant Slalom.
“I am very excited for the spring series the next and last race this year (at my home mountain Sugarloaf).”
Simon also had a solid weekend of skiing.
“This year I qualified for the Piches, placing sixth in the state and I think I contributed to the second-place finish for Maine,” Simon said in an email. “My results from the weekend are a 27th place finish in the Giant Slalom and a 28th in the slalom (this is out of 85 U12 boys).”
Both Ella and Simon qualified last year and the year before for the Piches, which pit young skiers from throughout the Northeast in a weekend of competition.
