Wildcats co-ed soccer drops heartbreaker to Islesboro
The Boothbay Region Elementary School Wildcats co-ed soccer team dropped a hard-fought game, 4-3 in overtime, against the Islesboro Eagles on Sherman Field Sept. 18.
The first half had exchanged goals twice between the teams, ending 2-2. The Wildcats put one more in the back of the Eagles’ net 10 minutes into the second half and just before the end of the game, the Eagles scored on a penalty kick to tie the game 3-3. Two of Boothbay’s goals were scored by Jordan Chamness and one by Nestor Powers.
There was a short break before going into the first of two five-minute overtime periods in which the next goal would end the game. Less than a minute in, goalie Aiden Sanborn took a hard line drive ball to the chest and brought it to the ground, but the ball had a considerable amount of English and escaped, rolling just past the line into the goal.
Said Coach Dave Lassen, “They’ve got some skills, right? We’re learning – it’s a new program … but these kids have really come a long way.”
BRES has at least seven more games leading up to a preliminary match for the postseason. The next game is away against Hope Elementary School on Monday, Sept. 23. The next home game is Wednesday, Sept. 25 against Jefferson Village School.
