Phoenix rise past Boothbay 65-54 in MVC action
Spruce Mountain of Jay avenged an early season loss with a 65-54 victory Jan. 28 over the Boothbay boys at Porter Memorial Gymnasium. The Phoenix and Seahawks traded leads through three quarters before Spruce Mountain’s deliberate offense slowly expanded a two-point lead to 11 in the final quarter.
In the first encounter, Boothbay earned a 47-44 victory over Class B Spruce Mountain. In both games, Phoenix senior guard Brandon Frey played a key role. In the loss, he scored 30. In the victory, he led all scorers with 35.
Boothbay was led by a trio of top scorers. Kaleb Ames, Ben Pearce and Hunter Crocker each scored 13 points. Other Seahawk scorers were Kaeden Ames with eight, Nick Morley with four and Sullivan Rice with three.
Boothbay drops to 12-4 and remains in third place in the Class C South standings. Spruce Mountain is 14-3 and in first place in Class B South. Boothbay hosts Class B Mountain Valley (8-8) on Friday.
