Southport Column: Primary, caucuses, art show
By publication day several of the big news items on Southport will be completed, the Town Meeting on Monday, March 2 and the primary election for candidates for the office of U.S. President on Tuesday, March 3. But for Democrats one more political event remains, the Democratic Caucus on Sunday, March 8. (Remember this day is also the beginning of daylight savings time, so set your clocks forward an hour.)
The Democrats from Southport, Boothbay, Boothbay Harbor, Edgecomb, and Westport will caucus at the Boothbay Region High School, beginning at 1 p.m. with registration for the caucus. The caucus will begin at 2 p.m. Unenrolled and independent voters may register as Democrats on caucus day.
Each town will elect caucus officers, town Democratic officers, as well as State Convention Delegates and County Democratic Committee representatives. By-laws will also be approved. Southport Democrats may discuss issues they think are important. During the afternoon all attending regional Democratic municipal parties may also meet together to hear any prospective state-wide candidates who wish to speak. Until 6 p.m. Friday, March 6, you may pre-register for the caucus at: www.mainedems.org/checkin>. If you remembered all this info from last week’s column, congratulations!
Sandra Seifert writes that a new art show has appeared at the Southport Memorial Library for March and April, which is the photography of Michael Leonard, well-known in his field of photography. His business of teaching people phototourism helps folks take their best shots while on vacation. This summer he will offer two cruises out of Boothbay Harbor taking folks and their cameras to scenic lighthouses and other scenic coastal places. While his show is at the library, Mike will offer a digital camera course on April 21 limited to 20 participants. A second course will also be offered if needed. Call 633-2741 or come to the library to sign up for the course and/or see the show. For a complete list of Mike’s programs visit his website at www.phototourismbymike.com and click on the events tab.
March is here and with the wind comes thoughts of spring. Robinson’s Wharf plans to open March 12. When I stopped by today a workman was about two-thirds finished repainting the floor in the room through which we enter.
Not looking like spring is the rim of ice surrounding our salt water. Perhaps the wave action in last Thursday’s storm splashed salt water higher than usual, which has now frozen. With warmer weather forecast for tomorrow I suspect most of it will be gone, but looks rather pretty today.
The workers on the Thompson bridge did suspend their efforts through Thursday’s storm, but today, Monday, a truck with two huge girders, 73 feet by about three feet, the driver told me when I rolled down my window to ask, was parked on the west side of Cross Road, apparently waiting for clearance to deliver the girders to the crane for placement on the bridge span. T’is fascinating to watch the work.
I am told that two of our island entrepreneurs are moving their places of business. The Harris’s are moving their clothing store, “Maine and Ivy” to a Townsend Avenue location where previously you could buy a Whoopee pie, and Molly Hutchins is moving her business, which will now be solely upholstering, into town. May both businesses flourish in their new locations. The Southport Island Association Ice Breaker party will be later in the month. Watch this space next week for more details.
