Florence Levasseur King, 99, a resident of Boothbay, formerly of Fairfield, died peacefully on April 20, 2021, at Mid Coast Senior Health Center in Brunswick.

She was born on Aug. 21, 1921, to Joseph and Clarisse (Ouellette) Levasseur in Waterville. Florence grew up with nine siblings which helped to foster her nurturing spirit. She graduated from Waterville High School and during World War II served at the Pentagon as clerical support, operating a duplicating machine. Upon her return to Maine, she attended Sister’s Hospital School of Nursing, graduating in 1947. Over 44 years she worked in a variety of nursing roles at Seton Hospital and Mid Maine Medical Center. She was among the first nurses in Maine to be certified in Neonatal intensive care. Florence took great pride and joy in caring for new mothers and their newborns. At the end of her long nursing career, she spent another eight fulfilling years’ working part time at Mount Saint Joseph’s Nursing Home. Florence was a lifelong member of the Maine State Nurses Association.

Florence was married to Harold F. King from June 5, 1948, until his death in 1993. They raised their family in Fairfield and were active members of The Immaculate Heart of Mary Church and the Fairfield Council of Churches. Through this Council they helped to establish the Fairfield Food Pantry and to administer blood drives. She volunteered regularly with The Demand Response program and Hospice Services.

In 2002, she moved to Boothbay Harbor to be closer to her daughter, Helen. In Boothbay she was an active member at Our Lady Queen of Peace Catholic Church. Throughout her life she valued her relationship with God and applied Christ’s teachings each day. She cherished her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren and spent time with them whenever possible.

Florence was preceded in death by her husband, Harold King; her nine siblings, Irene Faircloth, Mae Harmon, Doris Francis, Rita Giardina, Armand Levasseur, Leo Levasseur, Edgar Levasseur, Roch Levasseur and Richard Levasseur; her brothers-in-law, Richard and Theodore King; and her sister-in-law, Beatrice King.

Florence is survived by her three children, Catherine (Larry) Burch of Saratoga Springs, New York, Neal (Kathryn) King of Turner and Helen (Antoine) Atallah of East Boothbay; and her treasured sister-in-law, Bee King of East Boothbay. She cherished her five grandchildren, Patrick Burch, Harold King, Timothy Burch, Richard King and Katie King; and seven great-grandchildren, Henri and Charles Burch, Elise, Joseph, Ozzie and Calvin King and John F. Matulis. She will be greatly missed by all she inspired and loved.

The King family would like to extend gratitude to the staff at Mere Point Nursing for their outstanding care and in making her final months happy and comfortable. They would also offer warm thanks to the Elder Care Network of Lincoln County for their excellent care and attention to Florence.

Visiting hours will be from 12:30 to 3 p.m. with prayers to be recited at 1 p.m. on Thursday, May 6 at Lawry Brothers Funeral Home, 107 Main Street in Fairfield. A Memorial Mass will be held at a later date at Our Lady Queen of Peace Catholic Church in Boothbay Harbor. A private family burial will be at Maine Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Augusta.
