Southport Junior Yacht Club
It was another great week for sailing at the Southport Yacht Club with significantly better weather and wind. On Tuesday and Wednesday, 420 sailors raced at the Maine State Regatta. There were very light wind conditions on the first day of racing. Out of Southport Yacht Club's 420 sailors, Charlie Apolinsky and Brian Goldsmith came in second place, Lucas Thress and Peter Bauman came in fourth place, Alex Goldsmith and Maggie Doyle placed 19th, and Colin and Gavin Holt placed 33rd. Congratulations to all of the sailors that raced in the regatta.
Morning class sailors had two days last week in which they got to practice racing. Last Friday it was also very windy, and turnabouts sailed all the way to Little Christmas Cove. Because of the high winds on Friday, 420 sailors in the afternoon class had a race day, with Lucas Thress and Peter Bauman in the lead, Charlie Apolinsky and Brian Goldsmith in second, and Ella Freund and Ava Gauthier in third. Monday in the afternoon class, 420 sailors had another race day for the August series, with Charlie Apolinsky and Brian Goldsmith in first, Lucas Thress and Peter Bauman in second, and Lucy Gauthier and Sean Morrison in third place. On Tuesday, opti sailors competed in the Maine State Regatta. Those sailors were Ilyana Harrington who placed 31st, Gabriella Moen who placed 28th, Parker Baker who placed 18th, Nathan Phippen who placed 15th, Rachel Phippen who placed 8th, and Daphne Walsh who won first place overall, leaving SYC the option to host next year's Maine State Opti Regatta.
After sailing was cancelled on Thursday due to rain, Friday was absolutely beautiful and was an especially fun day for all sailors as SYC held their very own Olympics. Sailors were divided into teams which then picked countries to represent, and those countries were Ireland, Australia, New Zealand, Sweden, Italy, and USA. Sailors competed in events such as javelin, shot put, a running, sailing, rowing and swimming race, a gymnastics routine, synchronized swimming, and a cannonball, pencil dive, and freestyle jumping contest. In the morning class, bronze was awarded to team USA, silver to Italy, and gold to Australia. In the afternoon, Italy won the bronze medal, Sweden won silver, and Australia stole gold once again!
