Southport Yacht Club
After last week’s intensity with events, we took some time to regroup. We couldn’t avoid looking at the calendar and the remaining days of summer. Our time together on Southport is never quite long enough.
The final two-week session of the sailing program started last Monday and continues through this week. On Tuesday and Wednesday nights we have this year's version of the junior banquet, starting with ice cream at 6 p.m. There are two, smaller gatherings on the lawn to celebrate a great summer of learning and to highlight outstanding sailors with our annual sailing program awards. Both evenings start at 6 p.m., honoring Morning Class sailors on Tuesday the 17th and Afternoon Class sailors on Wednesday the 18th.
If you check out the accompanying photo, you’ll get a sense of the excitement of our Southport Junior Yacht Club Sailing Foundation Bingo nights. The prizes for this bingo are all baked goods made by sailing program families. From beautifully decorated sailboat cookies to gluten free delicacies, there is something for every lucky winner. The junior officers did a fabulous job of running the show and keeping the crowd laughing.
Sunday’s Cedarbush Triangle Race provided an exciting day on the water. With a sporty northerly that got quite puffy we managed 5 races, including a Cedarbush Island circumnavigation in honor of the race’s namesake. We had a solid turnout with 14 boats.

We finish the Rhodes 19 racing series this weekend with Friday, August 20th races at 4:30 p.m. and the season finale on Saturday, Aug. 21 at 1 p.m.
Notes are being taken, tests are being performed, and results are being tabulated! After a year off, the Beer Tasting is back on Saturday, Aug. 21 at 5:30 p.m. We will be celebrating the resumption of consumption with a selection of offerings from some of the smaller and possibly less well-known Maine brewers. In keeping with tradition, there will be a spectrum of beer styles to sample with the hope that everyone will experience some new flavors and find a particular brew to appreciate and enjoy. Sign up online or at the club.
Looking ahead, we have the 10 a.m. Membership Meeting on Saturday, Aug. 28 followed by the Closing Reception at 5:30 p.m.
