Calling for volunteers
The Hendricks Head Open Race was sailed July 21st under clear skies with 10 knots breeze. On corrected time the winners were James Emmerling and his grandfather in Reed the Wind. Second was the Erhard family in their JY.
Despite trying conditions for the running of the Seguin Island Trophy Races July 28th & 29th, the spirit of the JOY of summer in the Sheepscot River prevailed nonetheless! The fleet’s five divisions sailed a total of nineteen races over the two days.

The Pete Welles Trophy for best overall results was also awarded to Big Dog Party amidst barking cheers.
Southport Yacht Club extends hearty appreciation to the many volunteers and sponsors who supported the 2012 Seguin Island Trophy Races. Jen Baker was the event chair. Thanks go out to Jen for her undaunted enthusiasm, tireless organization, and grace throughout the weekend, Chip Baker for abiding support, Bud Hawley for his unlimited patience and kindness in coaching a rookie Principal Race Officer, Chuck Koch for his generosity in providing the signal boat Cordelia and timing the start sequences, David Braun, for his quiet, supportive competence in scoring the races, Jean Hawley (aka “June”!) for recording check-ins and finish times, Commodore Chris Jacobs for pin boat, launch driver, and heavy anchor hauling, and the O’Shea, Leoni, and D. Smith families for seamless mark and safety boat handling throughout the weekend. Jasper Houston ferried competitors between their boats and the docks and Doug Jones joined the protest committee on a moment’s notice.
Boothbay Region Boatyard generously hosted the event; Oliver’s provided lunches; Bash! Events, the dinner; Narragansett, the beer; Southport General Store, snacks; and Maloney Marine Rigging, Maine Sailing Partners, Smithwick & Mariners Insurance, the Newagen Group, and East Coast Yacht Sales, financial support. Many non-competitors joined us to make the Saturday evening festivities a cheery event. Hats off to one and all from SYC!
August 4 is the Pratt’s Island Turnabout Race. Start is at 1 p.m. outside of Cozy Harbor.
This Saturday, August 4 we will be having a lobster dinner at the Club. The BYOB social hour begins at 5, and dinner will be served at approximately 6. A special free bonus during the social hour: We have some special Dogfish Brewery beer that we will be serving to those who would like a taste. The lobster dinners feature a 1 1/4 pound lobster and come with corn, baked beans, salad, and blueberry cake. All that for only $10. What a deal! If you don't like lobster, the SYC grills, along with cooking utensils, will be available for you to grill whatever you like, and you can order the side dishes for only $5. Pay for your dinners (cash or check) at the Club on the evening of August 4th. You can sign up either using the traditional paper sign up sheets found at the Club or you can sign up online at http://tinyurl.com/SYC-Lobster-Dinner-2012b (the online sign up link can also be found in the News and Articles section of the SYC website). You can change your orders through Thursday, August 2.
A new shipment of SYC burgees has arrived. Each burgee costs $20. Treasurer Will Brinegar will be selling them at SYC events, and each of the SYC Flag Officers (Chris Jacobs, Holly Houston, and Nancy Custer Carroll) has a supply, so you can contact one of them to buy a burgee.
Many thanks to Geoff Chatterton who has produced new SYC bumper stickers. The bumper stickers are very attractive, circular, and show our burgee and have "Southport acht Club" on them. The colors on these new bumper stickers should not fade. While supplies last we will give each member family one bumper sticker for free, and additional ones can be purchased for $1 each. We will distribute/sell the bumper stickers at SYC events for the remainder of the summer. Let's show our SYC pride by displaying these bumper stickers on our cars.
Golfers: Don't forget the SYC Golf Tournament on August 5th. There is a sign up sheet at the SYC Club. Thank you Ron Schlemmer for organizing this. If you have any questions about this event please contact Ron at rschlemmer@aol.com or 633-5729.
I will be needing volunteers for the Arts and Crafts show on the 11th and 12th. Please check your social schedules to see if you can give two hours of your time to make the show a success. If you plan to have something to put in the show please call me at 633-2117.
