For Boothbay, tourney week has been a time for great memories
In the past two decades, Boothbay boys’ basketball has won a state championship, made three trips to the title game and been honored with two tournament most valuable players. Here’s a look back at the Seahawks’ tournament bids since 2001:
2001 proved to be a golden moment for the boys’ team. Boothbay won its first state basketball title at Bangor Auditorium, defeating undefeated Eastern Maine champion Piscataquis Community of Guilford, 71-66. Bill Hardwick had a game-high 28 points. Boothbay entered the Western Maine tournament with a 15-3 record. Boothbay defeated Telstar, 65-51, in the quarters. Bobby Deetjen scored 21. In the semi-final round, Boothbay had a much anticipated matchup versus Georges Valley and its star, Travis Magnusson. The Seahawks had a better team, and defeated the Buccaneers, 69-52. Deetjen scored 26 and Hardwick added 14. In the regional final, Boothbay routed Traip, 75-35. Deetjen scored 26 and was named tournament most valuable player.
In 2002, Boothbay finished 10-9 after a quarterfinal loss to Winthrop, 48-47. Bill Hardwick scored 21 points. The Seahawks defeated Old Orchard Beach in a preliminary game in qualifying for the tournament.
In 2003, Boothbay made its ninth straight trip to the tournament, defeating OOB, 49-46, in the quarters. Joe Parkhurst scored 13 points. In the semis, No. 1 Winthrop eliminated Boothbay, 63-44. Mike Norton led the team in scoring with 14. Boothbay finished 12-8.
In 2004, Boothbay finished sixth in the Heal points and drew No. 3 St. Dom’s in the quarterfinals. The Saints broke a 50-50 tie by sinking two free throws with five seconds remaining. Boothbay finished 12-8.
In 2005, Boothbay beat Winthrop, 67-60, in the quarters. Owen Johnson scored 33 in the victory. The Seahawks led rival Wiscasset by 17 points in the semis, before the Redskins rallied for a 53-51 win. Boothbay finished 14-6.
In 2006, Boothbay entered as the tournament’s top seed. In the quarters, Kris Noonan scored 16 points in a 49-40 win over Georges Valley. Boothbay defeated North Yarmouth Academy in overtime, 63-56. Roy Arsenault scored 24 in the semifinal round. Boothbay’s bid for a second gold ball ended in the regional final. Winthrop won 57-54. Matt Sceviour scored 16. Boothbay finished 19-3.
In 2007, Boothbay won its second regional championship of the decade. The Seahawks knocked out North Yarmouth Academy, 58-36, in the quarters. Roy Arsenault led the team in scoring with 14. In the semis, No. 2 Boothbay beat No. 3 Dirigo, 52-45. Scevoir led the team with 13 points. In the final, Boothbay dropped Winthrop, 71-46. Kris Noonan scored 22. In the state final, defending champion Calais had too much for Boothbay. The Blue Devils repeated as champs with a 70-46 victory. Sceviour led the team with 19 points. Boothbay finished 19-3.
In 2008, the Seahawks arrived in Augusta with a 16-2 mark. Boothbay beat Livermore, 65-38, in the quarters. Noonan scored 33. Dirigo ended Boothbay’s quest for a second straight regional championship with an overtime loss. Dirigo made a three-pointer in the final seconds. Noonan scored 18 points.
In 2009, Boothbay lost in the preliminary round. It was the first time in 16 years Boothbay didn’t qualify for the regional tournament. Waynflete beat Boothbay, 54-42, at Porter Memorial Gymnasium. Dan Hallinan led the team with 12 points. Boothbay finished 11-8.
In 2010, Boothbay returned to the Augusta Civic Center, but lost to OOB, 72-52, in the quarterfinals. Hallinan led the team’s scoring with 12. Boothbay finished 11-8.
In 2011, Boothbay reached the regional final, but lost to Dirigo, 53-48. Dan Dickinson led the team with 22 points. In the quarters, Anthony DiMauro scored 29 points in leading his team to victory over Traip, 73-60. Boothbay knocked off OOB, 54-47 in the semis. Dickinson scored 22 against the Seagulls. The Seahawks finished 18-4.
In 2012, No. 3 Boothbay was upset in the quarters by OOB, 71-48. DiMauro scored 18. The Seahawks finished 14-5.
In 2013, Boothbay won the regional championship by defeating Waynflete, 70-52. John Hepburn scored 22 points. He was also named tournament MVP. At Bangor Auditorium, Penquis of Milo claimed the gold ball, 61-54. The Seahawks trimmed a 13-point fourth quarter deficit to one with 38 seconds remaining. DiMauro led the team with 15 points. In the quarters, Boothbay beat Wiscasset, 67-43. In the semis, Boothbay beat Madison. The Seahawks finished 20-2.
In 2014, Boothbay finished 16-2 in the regular season. The Seahawks lost to Hall-Dale, 67-42, in the quarters as six players were suspended and two unavailable for the tournament.
In 2015, Boothbay entered Augusta as the top seed, but lost to Maranacook, 57-54. Hepburn scored 20 points. The Seahawks finished 16-3.
In 2016, Boothbay upset Madison, 61-59, in the quarters. Jacob Leonard scored 20. In the semis, Winthrop eliminated Boothbay, 45-31. Nick Gorey led the team with 11 points. Boothbay finished 12-8.
In 2017, Boothbay entered the tournament as the sixth seed and lost to No. 3 Madison, 63-41. Kyle Ames was the team’s leading scorer with 12. Boothbay finished 11-8.
In 2018, Boothbay upset Waynflete, 61-60 in the quarters. Waynflete led, 32-16, but Boothbay rallied for the victory. Ames scored 22 points. In the semis, Boothbay led 60-52 over Winthrop with 140 seconds left. The Ramblers scored the game’s last nine points to secure the win. Boothbay finished 14-6.
In 2019, Boothbay lost to Traip, 70-60, in the quarterfinals. Steve Reny scored 30. Boothbay finished 14-5.
In 2020, Boothbay beat Mt. Abram, 59-54, in the quarters. Hunter Crocker led the team with 20 points. In the semis, Waynflete eliminated the Seahawks, 53-41. Crocker scored 11 points.
In 2021, there was no Maine Principals’ Association tournament due to COVID-19.
