Seahawks traveling basketball team takes second place
The March Youth Basketball Tournaments began for the Lady Seahawks travel team the weekend of March 12. This young team of 9-11 year olds, coached by Lisa Hallinan and assistant coach Bernie Meader, won nine of 12 games this season and played a fierce and final game against the Class B Gardiner Tigers March 26 in Brunswick and took home the runner-up trophy.
Team members Addie Barter, Lilly Brown, Eleanor Erwin, Xavi Hall, Arabella Hodgdon, Nerla Bates, Meabh Hennessy, Jessica Raburn, Maddie Alley, Savannah Alley and Sammy Colby’s spirits were high accepting their first trophy.
“We beat Medomak, another Class B school, to compete with Gardiner and we’re in Class C. That’s the really big news,” said Hallinan. “I can’t tell you how proud I am of these girls. The future is theirs. Watching them is going to be a blast!”
Meader came on board as assistant coach along the way. “It’s been a long time since I coached girls and I think we all had fun. The girls did a great job. I just want them to be strong and confident in whatever they do.”
Bruce Orne, girls varsity coach at Boothbay Region High School, helped with offensive strategies. Krystle Hodgdon helped with coaching and was team scorekeeper.
Local donor businesses and people for this team’s inaugural season were: Shore Hills Campground, Blake’s Boatyard, Pinkham’s, Hawke Motors, Janson’s, Lori and Bill Bailey, Sherri Brown’s Daycare, Nell Fund, Marine Wiring Electronics, Heads of the Harbor and Lewis Excavation.
