BRHS tennis: Rosters, enthusiasm on upswing
Boothbay Region High School’s 2022 boys and girls tennis teams, as of April 8, each featured a full roster, much to the delight of veteran coach Alex Arsenault.
“I only have three returnees – Jaelyn Crocker and Hannah Roberts (co-captains) of the girls team and Andrew Fowlie for the boys – but I have enough players to fill the various positions and the enthusiasm has been great,” said Arsenault, who has coached BRHS tennis for 14 years.
“We’re going to win,” said freshman Chase Mansfield, as he walked past his coach during the preseason interview held before practice on a cold and damp April 7.
Arsenault said the weather hasn’t been too cooperative this preseason, with only one outside practice the first week due to rain, but the team has practiced outside the second week – except for Friday, April 8.
The coach said he has yet to determine the singles and doubles positions for the teams.
“It is wide open,” said Arsenault. “We will see what happens before the first match.” The Seahawk teams will start competing after April vacation.
Besides senior Crocker and junior Roberts, the girls’ roster includes seniors Katy Nein and Della Hahn, juniors Savannah Compare and Kyra Blake and freshman Laura Chapman.
In addition to Fowlie, a sophomore, and Mansfield, the boys’ roster includes sophomores Rodion Mayne and Colby Allen, and freshmen Neal Baldwin, Sawyer Blake and Cleyton Splaine.
The team’s first match is at home against Carrabec on Wednesday, April 27 at 4 p.m.
