Seahawks fall short to Falcons, bested by Raiders, Roadrunners
Seahawks baseball took another three losses over the past week. The team played a close game May 11 against the Mountain Valley High School Falcons ending the fourth inning 7-3 in favor of the Falcons and managing a rally by the seventh, putting the game into another four innings. The game was lost 18-16. The Seahawks traveled to Strong May 13 to face the Mt. Abram High School Roadrunners and lost 13-1.
Assistant Coach Bill Mansfield said the game against the Falcons was great trading run after run over 11 innings, a novelty for a nine-inning college or pro game let alone the seven-inning high school game.
"They'd score three runs, then we'd score three runs. They'd score two runs, we'd score two runs. They'd score a run, we'd score a run," said Mansfield. "It was a good game because we kept hitting, but we're just having a hard time fielding the ball."
Coach Ed Crocker and Mansfield said the 13-1 loss against the Roadrunners was another hard game with talented pitching going to waste on more errors in the field. Said Crocker, “We're not putting the ball on the bat and our pitching hasn't been terrible, but we're still not fielding well … It's discouraging that I know they can play better than they are.”
The Seahawks’ 25-1 home-field loss against the Oak Hill High School Raiders May 16 was by far the most painful one. With only four hits on offense, the Seahawks turned several errors on defense cycling through four pitchers in the five-inning game. Cleyton Splaine relieved starting pitcher Gryffin Kristan in the top of the third, Robert Shaw went to the mound in the top of the fourth and Jordan Carrier finished the game in the fifth inning.
“We just can't say it enough: They're a very young team … they're facing adults, 17-18-year-olds,” said Crocker.
Said Mansfield, “And I think they're realizing that high school baseball is a little harder.”
