Southport Junior Yacht Club
There were mixed conditions for sailing this week at the Southport Yacht Club, but we still got on the water every day for an excellent sail! We welcomed Alastair Ayandele, Desmond Ayandele, Reese Huff, Avery Hughson, Jack Hughson, Rowan Morrison, Cyrus O’connolly, Fergus O’connolly, Elisabeth Rutler, Jenna Smith, Robert Strange to the morning class this week. These eleven new sailors jumped into Cozy Harbor and rushed to the kitchen for hot chocolate before their first-morning sailing! On Friday, we all sailed to Five Islands, and along the way, we saw seals and porpoises!
We sent nineteen sailors to the Harraseeket Regatta in Freeport, Maine. This was a big time commitment for everyone who attended the regatta, but we want to thank the three SYC coaches who made sure our sailors had all the snacks and helpful coaching we needed for two days of racing! Thank you to Shannon Killian, Dane Phippen, and Charlie Apolinsky for being there for all the sailors. Also would like to thank all the parents who drove trailers and sailors to and from the regatta!
For the 420 Championships, Meredith Hill and Mary Wallace came in 29th place, Alex Goldsmith and Kimball Khetani came in 25th place, Stella Fields and Ella Donaldson came in 24th place, Ella Freund and Maggie Doyle came in 17th place, and Lucy Gauthier and Sean Morrison came in 9th place, congratulations to everyone! Alex Goldsmith and Kimball Khetani also won the sportsmanship award out of 39 boats!
The Optis did a phenomenal job at Harraseeket Regatta! Gigi Moen came in 15th place overall and 5th place in red fleet, Ily Harrington came in 7th place overall and 4th place in red fleet, Hadden Brinegar came in 6th place overall and won 1st place in white fleet, Rachel Phippen came in 5th place overall and 3rd place in red fleet, Nate Phippen came in 4th place overall and 2nd in blue fleet, Graydon Smith came in 2nd place overall and 1st place in blue fleet, and Daphne Walsh came in 1st place overall and 1st place in red fleet.
We are excited to announce the first SYC/BHYC junior sailing 420 Club to Club Race! The race will take place on Thursday, July 21 at 1 p.m. (rain date Friday) and include 420s from both SYC and BHYC. The starting line will be at the Hendricks Head red nun, and the finish will be near Burnt Island on the east side. The winner of the race will get their name on a small trash can in honor of the big boat Around the Southport Race. Please join us on the water to cheer on our junior sailors. There should be at least 20 boats on the line!
Coming up this week, we have our first Bingo of the year on Thursday, July 21. Hope to see you there!
