When “A Man Called Ove” was published in English in 2013, it stayed on the New York Times bestseller list for 42 weeks. When the Swedish film adaptation was released in 2015, it was a Best Foreign Film Oscar nominee.

Now, a decade since Ove (rhymes with tuba—more or less) was introduced to the English-reading public, Tom Hanks is re-imagining the beloved Swedish curmudgeon as a retired Pittsburgh grouch named Otto. Why rename the story’s main character (besides the fact that it is almost impossible for Americans to pronounce)? Tom Hanks explained, in a recent interview, “there has already been ‘A Man called Ove;’ there has already been a great performance (by Rolf Lassgard) of a man called Ove, so I will be a man called Otto in a movie called ‘A Man Called Otto.’”

Lucky for us, the Harbor Theater will be running “A Man Called Otto” from Jan. 13 to Jan. 26, and we have marked the Sunday, Jan. 22 matinee at 2 p.m. for a special post-viewing book/film discussion.
