Sailors undeterred by weather
Neither rain nor fog will keep die hard sailors from racing and this was the case at the Boothbay Harbor Yacht Club on June 29.
Ten boats in three classes came to the starting line on a fog shortened course Sunday at 1300 hours. The race course was set-up to start off Spruce Point and race around Burnt and Mouse islands.David Werner with “Lady June” provided the Committee Boat.
Fog created a delayed start, then conditions cleared – but only for the first half of the race when pea soup conditions caused the race to be called after once around the course.
The moving curtain of fog provided challenges as just finding the finish line proved elusive for a few boats.
Preliminary winners on corrected time include: BHOD – Fraulein, captained by Debbie Swan; Div. 1 PHRF – Grace Note, a Pearson Ensign; and Div. 2 PHRF, Firebolt, J80, captained by Bill Hunt.
“This series is open to all boats, non-members and members alike and is a great way to meet fellow sailors and learn to race with experienced racers,” said Ken Culbert, after the race. Culbert is co-chair of the Adult Sailing and Racing committee. “Sailboat racing is a life sport and we need to encourage greater participation.”
The next races are on Saturday, July 20 and August 17 at 1300 hours, preceded by a skippers' meeting at 1145.
