Ocean Point Column: Summer is heating up with events
Summer solstice finally arrived this past week although the weather has been anything but summer-like. I do hope that’s not the case for the upcoming Windjammer Days, keeping my fingers crossed.
Suddenly the Point has come to life with many residents arriving, foot traffic has increased substantially and the dinghy dock is quite full.
This upcoming week will be a full schedule of activities. Unfortunately Yoga is put on hold indefinitely but Zumba, tennis and a Porch Party on Friday evening from 5:30 to 7 to celebrate the official opening of summer activities will take place. Please bring your beverage of choice and an appetizer to share.
Our new ADS Tim and Abby Mahoney are due to arrive early in the week; Abby’s family has vacationed at Ocean Point for many years. She and her husband Tim have two children and we welcome them in their new roles as our ADS. They will be sharing the role of AD Tuesday through Sunday with Monday being their day off. Please stop by and introduce yourself.
Our assistant AD Isabel has already begun working and is busy preparing the Casino for the upcoming season.
The annual Horribles Parade will take place on Saturday morning, July 1 beginning at Van Horn Road and stepping off at 9:30. Come out and enjoy this time honored Ocean Point tradition and cheer on the participants as well as our new chairs of the event Jonathan and Kate Dawson.
Races and the first official ballgame of the season will follow the parade.
An important Town Hall meeting will be held on Saturday, July 1 at 4 p.m.; please plan on attending, as some key issues will be discussed.
The Rev. Wesley A. Smith, American Baptist Churches, USA (ret.), Harvey Cedars New Jersey will conduct the first service of the season at Wilson Memorial Chapel on Sunday, July 2 beginning at 9:30. Rev. Smith is a native of Burnt Hills, New York and received his B.A. in Biblical studies from Barrington College and his Masters of Divinity from Gordon Cromwell. He has served many churches throughout his career. Castlebay will provide music and Vicky Harvey will be the organist. All are welcome.
The Ice Cream Social will be held on Wednesday, July 5 at 7 p.m. and is chaired by Holly Cleary and Kate Dawson. The cost is $5.
Patty Gardner is chairing the first of our Food Sales on Friday, July 7. Patty would like to remind everyone that help is needed and please make a dish to donate. She hopes to have a variety of food items available such as salads, casseroles, main dishes, desserts or whatever your specialty may be. Along with food items please consider donating to the raffle, adult or child. Bring food treats to the Casino by 9 a.m. Doors open at 9:30. Come and enjoy morning coffee, donuts and lively conversation with neighbors and friends. Contact Patty Gardner for further information.
Lace up your running shoes Saturday morning, July 8 for the annual Ocean Point Road Race beginning with the Kid’s Fun run at 8 followed by the 5K at 8:30. Registration is currently on the OPCT website and they are looking for volunteers to assist as well. Contact Stephanie Kaler and Kelly Robbins for further information.
The Memorial Golf Tournament has been rescheduled. The original date was July 8 but due to another tournament on that day our tournament has been moved to July 15. Further information on the tournament will be forthcoming. Thank you to Mike Anderson for organizing the event.
The Rev. Charles Carrick will lead the Sunday services on July 9. He is a graduate of Drexel University earning a B.S. in computer science and Yale Divinity School earning a Masters in Divinity. Rev. Carrick is currently serving as Chaplain at Wyoming Seminary College Preparatory School. He also is head of the Math Department and teaches several courses. We are so fortunate to have Rev. Carrick, his wife Jill and their daughter Grace as part of the Ocean Point community. Services begin at 9:30 and all are welcome.
S’mores Night is Sunday, July 9 beginning at 7:30 at Grimes Cove. Bring your own fixings for s’mores. Ginna Yerrall, Maureen Driscoll and Stephanie Kaler are in charge of this activity.
The Library Committee is hosting a children’s book party and supper on Monday, July 10 at 5 p.m.
Get ready for Taco Tuesday Night on July 10 at 6:30 hosted by Ginna Yerrall and Company.
Information for the event will be on line however, if you have questions contact Ginna. This promises to be a fun and festive night out!
Ann Hussey Hogaboom would like to remind everyone that the Attic Treasure Sale is now a two-day event and will be held on Friday, July 21 and 22. Set up will occur on Thursday, July 20. If possible bring your treasures to the Casino on Thursday, as there is very limited space for storing items. Ann and her committee are in need of volunteers for set up, the days of the sale and cleanup. She will be posting sign up sheets at the Casino.
Please check the bulletin board at the Casino for updates and changes to the calendar.
As you can see we are ramping up for a very busy season and I have lots more to report. I hope to squeak in another column for next week if time allows.
Have a great week and enjoy Windjammer Days!
