Open mic at Southport General Store a hit!
On Thursday, July 6, it was the first seasonal open mic night at the Southport General Store. Starting at 7 on a beautiful evening, upwards of 20 people gathered to hear performance by several local artists. Among the performers were Gerry Gamage and Nancy Harriman, Eben Slaughter, Tom Baker, Ed Parker, Gloria Hellmann, and The Newagen Crew (Tim Hanley, Skip Simonds, and Nancy Harriman).
The evening was started off by a very moving rendition of “The Star-Spangled Banner” sung by Mel Rines. Mr. Rines is a veteran who was a jet pilot during the Korean War. His singing was heartfelt and the entire assembly joined in with him. It was a great beginning to a wonderful evening.
The evening ended with a rousing rendition of The Kingston Trio’s "Charlie on the MTA" played and sung by all the performers with lots of help from the audience.
The next open mic night will be Aug. 3 at 7 p.m., weather permitting. For more information, contact Skip at the Southport General Store.
