Students take sailing courses during second week
Building on a very successful first week, community sailing operations continued at the Boothbay Sea and Science Center’s Sailing Program at Wotton’s Wharf with all participants returning for a second week. Nathan Graves, Jay Hasch, Jonathan Rollins, Duncan Saal, Adam Sirois and Waylon Armstrong furthered their knowledge of sailing, boating and the sea by studying weather systems, navigation, compass and chart reading, boat care and maintenance and, of course, tons of rowing and sailing in Boothbay Harbor. These sailors also experienced firsthand on the water VHF communication skills and touch and go mooring exercises aboard the Center’s Sonar sailboat. As is the tradition on every Friday, the BSSC “Family Summer Cookout” once again rounded out the week.
The Center launches its “Mizzen Program” this week, providing the same sailing and seamanship instruction for younger participants, ages 5-7, who will experience the Sonar keelboat as well as the stalwart Turnabout dinghy.
BSSC’s program is currently offering weekday instruction in sailing and seamanship for students age 5 to 55+ in rowboats, Turnabout sailing dinghies and the Sonar keelboat out of Wotton’s Wharf. Boats are also available for private instruction on weekends depending on availability.
Please contact Gray Ferris, BSSC Sailing Director, by calling 207-350-5357 or email the Center at info@boothbayseaandsciencecenter.org. For more information about our exciting programs please visit www.boothbayseaandsciencecenter.org. Classes at BSSC are filled on a first-come, first-served basis.
