Yacht club hosts 39th annual regatta
The past weekend saw the running of the 39th annual Boothbay Harbor Yacht Club Regatta which once again was the largest such gathering on the coast of Maine this summer.
Thirty-one boats competed in several classes for bragging rights and lovely curved glass trophies presented by Commodore Neil Newton to the winners at the Sunday evening awards ceremony and cookout.
Bud Hawley of Southport Yacht Club served as the PRO (Principal Race Officer) and BHYC Adult Sailing Director Geoff McCuskey was director of the BHOD and J-24 races. Beautiful weather was accentuated by light winds on Saturday and better breezes on Sunday and all boats were in safe harbor by the time the late day Sunday squall hit.
In Division 1, Apparition, a Swan 42 sailed by Ken and Ginny Colburn of BHYC, took top honors followed by Tamarak, sailed by Bob Kellogg, and Wilde Agnes with Stuart McNeil third.
In Division 2, Keemah, a J-106 owned by Donald Logan, finished first; Kaos, with Scott Smithwick was second; and Scapa, sailed by Ryan Reber, was third.
Division 3 was won by Firebolt, skippered by Bill Hunt of BHYC; Dotsy, sailed by Sally Lloyd, finished second; and Wave of Mutilation, with Robert Maharg, was third.
In the Cruising Class, a scoring glitch left the results unclear at press time with top three honors to be sorted out between Kit Watson’s Too Elusive, Bob Scribner’s Panache (a BHYC boat) and Randy Rice’s Imagine.
The thrill of the day came with the presentation of the top honors for the Boothbay Harbor One Design Division when 14-year-old skipper Jacqueline van der Veen was called to the podium to accept top honors for her sailing of Marion’s Weigh.
Jax’s crew included her sister, Emma, age 10, Thomas Hall, age 10, and Mariner Fagan, age 11. This crew also won the coveted Hank Spencer award for the youngest crew in the fleet.
