Many more events as summer winds down
As the summer winds down, there are still many events still to come. This weekend will feature the annual Arts and Crafts show and sale. For those of you who do not know anything about this two day event, it was started in 1968 to showcase Southport Island artists. It has evolved over the years to include many more artisans from the region.
This year we will have several first-time participants with different art and craft items. One can always find one of a kind gifts for friends and family. The show opens at 10 a.m. on both Saturday and Sunday. We hope you will stop by and support the Sailing Foundation which benefits from the profits of the sale. Thank you to those who have volunteered to work on the show. The schedule will be posted in the club if you are unsure about your time assignment.
On Saturday at 1 p.m., the fourth and newest of our Turnabout races will be held. This is open to all ages. The original race of this kind, called the Pratt’s Island Race was raced last Saturday and there were 21 boats on the line. After three races. The winning team was the father/daughter duo of Andrew and Rachel Grimes. Just three points behind were their brother-in-law and cousin, Goeff and Martha Rand. The race committee reports that it was great to see lots of parent/child teams, husband and wife teams, cousins sailing together, former instructors and lots of smiling faces.
The committee also is very relieved when all the boats survived the first race when the wind was quite stiff and with a strong tide pull going in the opposite direction creating some big waves. All crews came back wet but safely.
Many thanks to Annette DeJarnett, who organized the very successful lobster dinner last Saturday evening. There were almost 200 members and guests who enjoyed a lovely summer evening and lots of delicious food. Her crew did very well in making the event run smoothly.
