Local author book signing at Sherman’s June 28
Boothbay Harbor author Alfred Kildow’s fourth novel, “Chandelle,” published by Maine Authors Publishing, is being released this month. On Saturday, June 29, Kildow will sign copies of the novel at Sherman’s in Boothbay Harbor, from 1 to 3 p.m.
“Chandelle” is a love story interrupted by war. It focuses on a jet fighter battle in Korea and an unusual romance spawned by that war. Kildow’s service as a jet fighter pilot during that war lends authenticity. The novel also depicts an aerial battle over the Soviet Union.
In the novel, Captain Robert Williams, as a 10-year-old orphan, flees an abusive home on the Texas/Mexico border, hitchhiking across the country. He is picked up by a young couple who take him into their home. The couple dies tragically just after Robert finishes high school. He joins the Air Force and becomes a fighter pilot. All the while, Robert hides a chilling secret deep inside him.
Letitia Fairfield is wealthy, married to a diplomat she hates and when she meets Robert by chance at a small hotel in Japan, she quickly tells him the secret she has concealed: she’s plotting to divorce her husband.
Their romance blooms but is interrupted by Robert’s return to combat, promising to reunite when he completes his combat tour, in five months. They do reunite, but it’s five years later. Those five years, Kildow explains, “are the guts of this novel’s story.”
Kildow spoke last week about his novel in a talk at the Boothbay Harbor Yacht Club and plans to give similar talks throughout Maine in coming weeks.
His previous novels are also being sold at Sherman’s and on Amazon: “Fallout: Remains of an Atomic War,” “Exiles: a Curveball Called Destiny,” and “Prelude to a Sting.”
