Trevett Column: July 17 potluck
July 17th is the date for July’s potluck and the kitchen team of Suzanne, Judy and Alan would like you to bring either a main or side dish or a dessert to share. If you are bringing guests, you might want to bring extra. As always, water and coffee will be provided but you are welcome to bring your beverage of choice. You may contact Evelyn (380-6977 or evelynshahan@gmail.com) with any questions. See you at 5:30.
At the potluck you will be able to hear the results of the Better Than A Yard Sale but in the meanwhile a really, really big thank you to the folks who donated goods. The hall was well filled with amazing items days before the sale. And another thank you goes out to those who helped sort, price and display the goodies. And thanks to those who promised to have last minute plants and baked goods for the sale.
The 60+ folks at the June potluck were treated to a fun evening. Joan provided a history of the BICA hall with its three different locations and the ordeal of installing an indoor bathroom. She also spoke about attending school next to the Baptist church. Brian told stories of his times lobstering and shrimping and house building. Jamie reminisced about growing up on the island, the highlight of which may have been riding the school bus. And Fred talked about deer and occasional coyote hunting, knowing every wooded acre on the island and walking to East Boothbay and the Harbor to meet girls and go to the movies. This was very entertaining as well as informative. Lots of questions and lots and lots of laughter. Thanks to Bill for organizing such an enjoyable presentation. And thanks to Irena, Lee, Kim and Joanne for taking care of the kitchen duties and as always, Bill the dishwasher specialist.
A heads up—the August potluck will not be held on the usual Wednesday. Instead it will be the Barters Island Community Cook Out on Saturday, Aug. 24 at 3 p.m. This is a rain or shine event. Hot dogs and hamburgers will be provided and you are asked to bring a side dish, salad or dessert and your own beverage.
Laura and Bucky are doing a great job with the lobster raffle. Tickets will be available at the July potluck and the August cookout with the final drawing taking place at the August picnic. If you want to buy tickets at another time just let Evelyn know. A dollar for one ticket and the smarter buy of 6 tickets for $5.
A reminder that Stanley Sr. and Loriann operate Seacoast Redemption located at 15 Hardwick Road (next to Dolphin Mini Golf). They will donate the value of your returnables to BICA if you let them know that it what you want them to do. So recycle your returnables, help BICA and treat yourself to a soft serve at the Hut while you are about it. Thanks to Stan and Loriann for their generosity.
BICA can always use help—if you would like to volunteer to help host a potluck please get in touch with Evelyn to learn more about how it works.
