Bayville Buzz
The incredible weather continues. Even Goldilocks would love it - not too hot, not too cold. As I write this Sunday night, a loon's call echoes across Linekin Bay - how cool is that! .
Speaking of birds, in perhaps the most embarrassing moment in the annals of Buzz history (though there are many to choose from), we have been notified by resident avian experts that the flamingo recently gracing our shores was not Frankie, but instead our beloved Philbert. The Buzz sincerely apologizes to both and promises to send all staff to remedial ornithology classes immediately. In a hopefully unrelated item, Philbert has not been spotted since that unfortunate error. I doubt Philbert can read, but one has to wonder.
I hope everyone is resting up and eating their Wheaties as this weekend will be a busy one.
On Saturday, July 27, things get started (at 9 a.m. I believe) with the Pickleball Tournament. Ever since pros were allowed to compete, the level of play seems to improve almost exponentially each year and I'm sure this Saturday will be the same. To avoid the havoc of the past couple of tournaments, autographs will only be signed by players after the championship match.
Then later that day (2 p.m. the Buzz believes) the Waterfront Festival gets underway. The competition here will be fierce I'm sure, but since the discontinuation of the triathlon and blind folded rowing, does anyone really deserve to be crowned Ruler of the Sea? Perhaps this once coveted award will go the way of the short lived Ruler of the Bay?
Either way, the Ice Cream Social follows and everyone will be rewarded by the Super Scoopers as they dish out bowl after bowl of ice cream and all the fixings to competitors and spectators alike. I forget all the flavors offered, but I do remember the Buzz's favorite, Bayville Blues.
The next day, Sunday, July 28, is for those of you who haven't been able to attend one of the previous two meetings held to discuss the proposed new dues structure. Meeting time is 9 a.m. at the Community House. The BVC Board wants everyone to have the opportunity to give their thoughts.
The fun continues the following weekend, beginning Friday, Aug. 2, when the outdoor miniplex will be showing some kid friendly movie. Stay tuned for time and title.
The next morning, Saturday, Aug. 3, again at 9 a.m. at the Community House, the business begins as the annual Bayville Village Corporation gets underway. There was talk of a special meeting of the Bayville Improvement Association immediately after, but that will most likely be moved to a later date. More discussion on that as details become clearer.
If you haven't signed up for the Lobster Bake on the evening of Aug. 3 yet, where have you been? If you are attending - and the Buzz hopes you are - get right over to the Post Office to sign up or call Phil immediately (we all have his number don't we?), so you aren't left out. Huge kudos to Phil and crew for helping keep the Betty LaPointe Bake going! Speaking of help, corn shuckers will be needed as well as table and chair movers. I'm not sure what time the shucking will be happening, but table and chairs will be happening right after the meeting. It was wonderful having so many younger (and stronger) people helping during the July 4 festivities. The older generation is hoping for a repeat performance!
The Bake gets started at 6 p.m., but starting at 5 is Social Hour. That means it's time to get out your lost shaker of salt (thank you Jimmy Buffet) - or whatever else you need - to mix the winning Bayville Buzz concoction for 2024. In years past, no one has been declared a winner, but there have certainly been no losers!
The Ring of Fire has once again been a hub of activity. Tampa Bay is always well represented at these gatherings and the last couple of weeks have been no different. There have been the two Scannon daughters, Jordan and Mary Laurel, along with their families, as well as the two Spencer daughters, Anna and Mary Elizabeth. There was even a Ray, outfielder Josh Lowe, visiting during the MLB all-star break, as he and Anna are engaged and getting married in January. Congratulations to them!
Celebration has once again returned from Rockland with hardware in hand. This year the Friendship sloop and crew got 2nd in their Division after three days of racing. Congratulations to them too! Captain emeritus, Greg Merrill, credits his young skippers; grandson Bryce and nephew Nathaniel and in the not so young category, brother John, with Celebration's success.
Enjoy all the festivities and send your news to thejeffallison@gmail.com
