Southport Junior Yacht Club
This week was the fourth of the Southport Yacht Club sailing program. We attended another regatta at the Haraseeket Yacht Club in Freeport, hosted our second Ice Cream Social, were home to pirates on Friday, and the Senior Yacht Club hosted a cornhole tournament. We had a busy, but exciting, week!
In the morning class, we had two swimmers, on Monday: Juliette Rutler and Gunner Ferguson. We had a wonderful week of sailing with heavy breezes that our younger sailors learned to conquer. On Thursday, our morning class sailors could be found playing an eventful game of alphabet soup where they must collect lettered sponges thrown into the water to form words. This game has been around for quite a bit of SYC’s history and I can happily report it still receives the same approval as it always has. On Friday, our sailors and instructors became swashbuckling pirates for our annual Pirate Day! The pirates ventured to Powderhorn for a scavenger hunt to find the lost treasure! SYC saw some fabulous costumes and teamwork on Friday.
For our afternoon class, we also had a wonderful week of sailing, and some of our sailors attended the Haraseeket Regatta. Leaving on Monday afternoon to compete on Tuesday and Wednesday, we sent three 420s and five Optimists. For our 420s, out of 31 boats, Nate Phippen and Graydon Smith finished third, Rachel Phippen and Logan Snyder finished sixth, and Ilyana Harrington and Skye Harrington finished seventh. For our Optis, out of twenty-seven boats, Hadden Brinegar finished first, Brooks Baker finished third, Surina Kelchner finished ninth, Taylor Smith finished tenth, and Angus Preston finished twenty-first. SYC had some fabulous representation at this regatta. Well done sailors!
The second Ice Cream Social was hosted on Thursday by our Junior Officers. It was a successful event and it's safe to say we had more than enough whipped cream! This was our last Ice Cream Social of the summer, but we hope you’ll join us next year.
On Friday, the Southport Senior Yacht Club hosted its annual cornhole tournament. Run by Hollyanna Bates, eight teams competed in the event! There was strong competition, but in the end, after hours of neck-at-neck competition, it was won by Joe Duffy and Eleanor Marshall who received a gift card to the Southport General Store as a prize.
Next week we will have our regular Wednesday Kickball at 6 p.m.. at the Southport School, where we hope you’ll join us. Stay tuned for week five’s report next Monday to hear more about SYC and its upcoming events.
