Southport Yacht Club
What an exciting week on the SYC campus! We hosted the Maine State Opti Regatta on Wednesday and Thursday, with 60 young sailors racing on the Sheepscot. It is quite a scene as each student rigs her/his boat on the lawn, then all launch at the ramp and head out to race. The current in the Sheepscot River was strong, and it took a bit of time for the wind to arrive. The Race Committee ran 8 races for the more experienced Championship Fleet, while the newer sailors enjoyed the fun of racing in Green Fleet. Southport prevailed for the fourth consecutive year with Hadden Brinegar winning 7 out of 8 races, and finishing 1st to secure the Maine State Opti Championship for Southport. Thanks to the tremendous crew of volunteers on the water who run races, set marks, judge the races and host spectators. On shore Regatta Co-Chair Maddie Kaler led an experienced crew of volunteers who fed breakfast, lunch and dinner to hungry racers, coaches and parents. After a lasagna feast, all participants were invited to Wednesday night kickball at the Southport School for more fun ashore. Co-Chair Chace Brinegar oversaw the racing and administration of the regatta. A special thanks to our female Race Committees led by Gretchen Sullivan, Sarah Helming and Nancy Custer Carroll. This was Southport sailing at its finest with capable volunteers ensuring an excellent experience for the racers who traveled from nine different clubs across Maine!
Saturday morning there was an equally strong turnout with nearly 100 runners for the annual Rock the Boat 5K run. Rain did not dampen the spirits of the intrepid SYC racers who put on their sneakers and ran to Hendricks Head beach and back. Winners in each age category received a pie, baked or provided by an SYC member. Thanks to Hollyanna Bates and her capable crew of volunteers who stood in the rain ringing cowbells while serving as course marshals. It was a terrific scene, and the fastest racer set a new course record!
This week we will host our second brunch at SYC on Tuesday morning Aug. 6 at 10:30. This is our Member Memorial brunch. These potluck gatherings offer an opportunity to thank our members for many years of participation in a casual atmosphere. Other activities this week include Monday morning coffee, and Tuesday evening ladies night at 7:00. These informal gatherings are gaining momentum with female participants of all ages. (BYOB)
SYC's annual meeting will be held on Saturday morning, Aug. 10 at 10. Join us to hear the latest news as the SYC summer quickly draws to a close. Saturday afternoon at 1 is the Hendricks Head Open Race, followed by Team Chatterton's beer tasting at 5:30. Enjoy great harbor views and good conversation. Geoff Chatterton's commentary is always insightful as he leads us in sampling a variety of brews, including one he brewed himself!
SYC members and Southport friends are invited to gather on Sunday morning, Aug. 11 at 11 for a community celebration of the life of Anne Grimes. Anne served as SYC treasurer for many years and as membership chair, while husband Mike Grimes served as fleet captain. The Grimes Family invites you to stop by on Sunday morning to share memories over brunch.
