Sprucewold Column: Favorite spots, visitors and more
Fogged in! The cabin is overflowing with children, granddaughters, relatives, and friends; the best time of year! We are checking off the bucket lists of the little ones, Sprucewold Beach, Barrett’s Park, and Hendrick’s Head were first to be checked off. They love Linekin Bay Resort, Boothbay Lobster Wharf, Karen’s Hideaway, Southport General Store, and Shannon ‘s Unshelled. We made our annual voyage to Cabbage Island and Grandfather Charles performed miracles with our leftovers: lobster risotto, corn chowder, onion soup, potato salad, and butter grilled blueberry cake.
A morning hike at Dodge Point and The Rooting Pig at Broad Arrow Farm in Bristol for lunch was enjoyed by all. In the evening we went to an interesting Bigelow Galapagos Island talk at the Footbridge Brewery followed by the Ice Cream Factory and band concert. One of the granddaughters favorite things to do is to hire themselves out as gardeners to us and then go to town to spend their wages at their special shops: Downeast Candies, Sherman’s, Coastal Maine Popcorn Company, Orne’s Candy Store, and Seawick Candles for hand lotion and perfume.
Game days fill the time on rainy days, playing old preferences and new discoveries. The adults made a trek to Morse’s, Beth’s Farmstand, and a stop at Moody’s for lunch. We had a delightful trip with the girls to the Lincoln Theater for the 85th anniversary showing of “The Wizard of Oz” and then the annual trip to Reny’s and the Puffin Shop in Damariscotta. Everyone has their favorite places to go and it is just wonderful for the family traditions to continue.
The Moulaisons have had a cousin's summer, visitors from Nova Scotia to Florida. The Moore/Miller cabin is hosting the younger generation in residence for the week. Pumillia/Ortlip cabin is hosting their family. It is nice to see lights at the Jascot cabin. The Boggs have been working on the roof of their cabin which was damaged by a tree fall earlier this year. The Angels didn’t make it this year but their daughter Kristi was here in July. The Rittershaus cabin on Crest will have its family from New Orleans who will see Sprucewold and Boothbay Harbor for the first time this week. This week students are beginning to leave for colleges and universities. Teachers are getting ready for the new school year. The end of August is a time of transition, the end of summer is still a month away but sad to say the end is near.
The Sprucewold Association Executive Committee will receive their ballots by email to elect the slate of officers for the next two years. If there are any announcements that you would like printed and posted on the mail/message, please let me know.
