At 9:08 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 22, Sagadahoc County Sheriff’s Office responded to a report of a two-vehicle head-on collision on U.S. Route One near the intersection of Shaw Road, near Weston Road. A deputy was on scene within two minutes, and immediately requested the road be closed.

A 2013 Buick Encore, operated by Margaret J. Daniel, 24, of Lewisburg, Pennsylvania traveling north on Route One attempted to pass multiple vehicles also traveling north. Daniel died at the scene as a result of extensive injuries.

A 2013 Chrysler 300, operated by Colby Brown, 28, of Old Orchard Beach was traveling southbound on Route One. His vehicle collided with the oncoming vehicle in the southbound lane. Brown was pinned in his vehicle and had to be extricated. He was subsequently transported to Maine Medical Center in Portland, by LifeFlight. He sustained multiple broken bones, but his injuries are not considered life-threatening.

Witnesses confirmed to investigators that Daniel’s vehicle was passing several vehicles when the collision occurred and speed is a contributing factor, however the accident remains under investigation.

Deputy Ryan Camarda is investigating the crash which is being reconstructed by Detective Brian Carlton of Sagadahoc County Sheriff’s Office. Woolwich Fire/Rescue provided emergency medical services and assisted at the scene. Bath Police Department assisted with traffic control.

Route One was closed for about four hours. It reopened to traffic at 1 a.m. Friday.
