Juniper-McKown Points Column: Weddings and more

Tue, 09/03/2024 - 10:15am

First off, many thanks to Peter Edwards for writing such a terrific column last week. He’ll be the designated sub next year for sure!

When you read this Labor Day will have come and gone. It was “early” this year. The End-Of-Summer Salad send off lunch reflected the early holiday with a smaller than usual group enjoying a convivial lunch last week. Thanks to Anne Markette, who besides her role as JPVIS President, pitches in to organize and set up many events, including this one.

There will be one more yoga class, this coming Saturday Sept. 7, 8:45 a.m. at the Community House.

June is supposed to be wedding season, but not here. Late August and September seem to be favorites. Emily Whiting has submitted the following:

Jessica Dumphy, Mark Manfredi and Kristen and Blair Gray were among the JPVIS members celebrating the marriage of Emily Whiting’s daughter Charlotte Goodman to John Rupp (a 2024 JPVIS triples champion) Aug. 24 at Marianmade Farm on the Sheepscot River in Wiscasset. The groom’s father the Honorable Nelson Rupp performed the ceremony.  The wedding party included the groom’s brother Eddie and nephew Jackson and the bride’s sister and brother, Caroline and Nate. The weekend began with the arrival of the wedding party by boat for a welcome reception at the Yacht Club and ended with a lovely Sunday brunch at the home of Chris and Kim Byrd.  It was a long weekend of wonderful memories made.

And another couple are celebrating after the fact. Fred and Dibby Moder’s daughter Emily and husband, Greg, will be having a celebration of their marriage on Sept. 7 at the Shipyard in Boothbay Harbor.  They married in England during pandemic restrictions, and look forward to bringing family and friends to Maine next week.

Congratulations to all the families.

Speaking of celebrations, two JPVIS members will be bounding into another decade soon. (You’ll have to ask them which decade.) Bev McCoid is first up in early September, followed by Mary MacCormac in January. Happy Birthday to you both!

This is the last column of the season. Thank you to every one of you who reads it and gives me feedback. I always start the season with my New York Times Style and Usage Manual and a Thesaurus at my side but quickly ignore them in favor of a sprinkling of semicolons and dashes and what sounds right. Any omissions and errors in these columns are all mine.

In particular a big thank you to the Register for printing the comings and goings of our JPVIS community. We are so lucky to have an independent newspaper; make sure to support them and their advertisers.
