Sprucewold Column: Like the hummingbirds
The end of the Sprucewold summer season is near when Gardens Aglow tickets go on sale for the 2024 show at the Coastal Maine Botanical Gardens. If you have not visited, you need to return for this spectacular sight at the CMBG.
We are like the ruby-throated hummingbirds in their north/south migration. We arrived in Sprucewold in early May, now we will reverse the trip to leave in early October. The exception is that we stop at home in Massachusetts, and the hummingbirds continue to Florida, the Gulf Coast, and on to Mexico, and Central America. Some years we follow them.
The weather has been glorious, with just a week left before fall officially arrives. It is so beautiful and warm, perfect for forest bathing! We walked the Boothbay Region Land Trust Trail at Porter Preserve this week, such an asset to the land trust. The green moss that carpets the floor of the forest was so restful to the eyes. Every year, we plan to walk all the trails, but we end up going back to the familiar: Schoolhouse Pond, Oak Point, and Porter. The Gregory Hiking Trail and Hendricks Head Trails are great if you are looking for a very short hike, just a step off the road you are in the woods. Last year, we went by boat and hiked the trails on to Damariscove Island and Indiantown Island. I have fallen recently, so I now use my walking sticks. The trails are well marked, trees are blazed based on degrees of difficulty. Our friends visiting this week are hikers, and they were impressed with the well kept trails.
If you don't have one, please get your directory before you leave for the season. Contact me by cell, text, or email. As you close up your cabin, don’t forget the food pantry, or the thrift shops in town. Fill out your change of address form either online or at the post office.
Enjoy the last weeks of the season, make everyday a wonderful memory to carry you through the cold icy winter until we meet back here in the spring with the hummingbirds!
