Glorious weather for sailing
Five straight days of sunshine and wind: a sailor’s dream come true. The week of August 12 found sailors Weylon Armstrong, Jay Hasch, Rowan Kristan, Benjamin Pearce, Caelan Newton, MacCarey Kelsch and Adam Sirois at the Boothbay Sea and Science Center taking full advantage of the on the water sailing privileges that this glorious weather afforded them.
At week’s end, downsizing to Turnabouts and Optimist Dinghies, these sailors had the opportunity to translate their big boat sailing skills to these smaller crafts. Applying their tacking and navigation skills they met the challenge as they negotiated the all too familiar shifting winds and current inherent in Mill Cove.
Their daily rowing brought them new adventure as they found themselves collecting marine debris like golf balls (yes – golf balls in Mill Cove!) and enjoying close encounters with resident hermit crabs and baby shrimp.
For the first time in several weeks, the weather permitted the end-of-week family cookout to be held outside at Wotton’s Wharf.
During the week of August 26, weather permitting, the Boothbay Sea and Science Center will hold an open house at Wotton’s Wharf each afternoon from 1 to 4 p.m. All are invited to come learn more about the Center’s 2014 summer programs and experience firsthand sailing aboard the Sonar. Space is limited aboard the keelboat.
The Boothbay Sea and Science Center is currently offering weekday instruction in sailing and seamanship for students age 5 to 55-plus in rowboats, Turnabout sailing dinghies, Optis and Sonar keelboats out of Wotton’s Wharf. Boats are also available for private instruction on some weekends depending on availability. Please contact Gray Ferris, BSSC Sailing Director, at 207-350-5357 or visit boothbayseaandsciencecenter.org for more information about our exciting programs. Classes at BSSC are filled on a first-come, first-served basis.
