Good job, sailors
A beautiful Monday morning greeted our sailors for the last week of the 2013 sailing season. With school “just around the corner” for many of the students and instructors, everyone was looking forward to getting in one more week of sailing.
The Monday morning swim test included many new faces and younger siblings. We welcomed the following students: Skylar Shickel, Nate Goodman, Blake Donnellan, and George and Nicholas Huberty. Phoebe Lewis and Gus Shea also completed the swim test to begin the program next summer.
On Monday, the 420 class was able to complete four races for the August series. At the end of the day, Jasper Houston and Annie Britton took first place, Nuala Spillane and Megan Roach, second place, David Turley and Jennifer Killian, third place, and Sherman Brewer and Madison Gaudette finished in fourth place. It was an excellent day of sailing.
Last Tuesday, four 420s, five Optis, and two coach boats were loaded up for the annual Harraseeket Youth Regatta on Wednesday and Thursday. This regatta is always enjoyed by our sailors. Here are the results:
420 Class: Jasper Houston and Jo Shaw (seventh), David Wollins Jr. and Jennifer Killian (ninth), David Turley and Grant Auber (tenth), and Nuala Spillane and Megan Roach (twelfth).
Opti Green Fleet: Tia Freund (ninth).
Opti Championship Fleet: Andrew Turley (third), Max Freund (fifth), Blake Erhard (sixth), and Shannon Pyne (seventeenth).
Great job sailors! We are proud of your accomplishments. Thank you to Holly Houston, Jennifer Auber, Dan Freund and Holly Pyne for transporting boats and helping make this opportunity possible.
Healthy competition was also found in the Turnabout fleet with four tight races. At the end of the day, Eliza Goodell and Isabelle Abaldo finished first with four points, Ryan Hughes and Logan Abaldo finished second with five points, Alice Grimes and Martha Rand finished in third with eight points, and Kate McPhee and Harriet Matthews finished in fourth with 11 points.
We ended the week with the morning class hiking around Indiantown Island. Exercise is always more enjoyable when done with friends. After the hike, students were transported to Spectacle Island where they roamed the coast in search of ocean treasures. Some students went for a swim, while others hunted for crabs under the rocks and seaweed.
