August sailing ends
The August season ended with two opportunities to hear of the participants of all of the sailing events of the summer. Friday sailors, parents and grandparents crammed into Southport Town Hall to hear about how all of the sailors learned and succeeded during the summer. Will Jacobs opened the evening with a salute to some of the Turnabout beginning sailors and their great personalities, helpfulness, talents, and overall contributions to the morning program.
Results of the Turnabout racing season were as follows: First in July, Isaiah Reid, and second, Isabelle Abaldo; First in August, Isabelle Abaldo, and second Alice Grimes.
In Optis: First in July, Andrew Turley, second Dane Phippen; First in August, Andrew Turley, second Blake Erhard.
In 420s First in July, Jasper Houston and crew Annie Britton, second, David Turley and crew Jen Killian; and third, Sherm Brewer and crew Maddie Gaudette. Season went to Andrew Turley.

Thank yous were expressed for the banquet organizers and volunteers. The meal was delicious and enjoyed by all.
Saturday morning, the members gathered for the annual meeting. As usual we heard about the state of the finances, the building, the racing season, the sailing program and the future plans. We have 233 member units with a few outstanding dues to be sent in. Will Jacobs thanked those who have made his job easier, Fred Helming, Nance Custer Carroll, Bob Houston ,Commodore Holly Houston, Dave Smith Russ Jackson and the Carlson family.
This year there were 230 in the program and about $9,100 was given in scholarships. It is recommended that we be cognizant of the fact that the classes fill up very fast and one should get the applications in early in 2014 to avoid being disappointed. There is currently a plan to level the area to the north of the senior building to allow for additional space for our events which occasionally outgrow the current spaces. For those of us who like to be around in October, there will be a gas fireplace insert installed so that we will be more comfortable for meetings and events when the weather is cooler.
Future plans include an upgrade of the electrical system and replacement of upstairs windows. In general the social events were well attended, The Seguin Island weekend was successful, the dock and its rules seemed to work fine and a ladder has been moved to a better spot. Jack Bauman briefed us on the work of the Archives committee and gave us a bit of history of the focus of Donald White who was instrumental in getting the harbor blasted and dredged for better access. The nominating committee thanked outgoing board members, Craig MacCormack, and Annette DeJarnett and announced that Keith Turley will be joining the board next year. The Board was advised to seek one other member to fill the remaining slot.
Saturday evening at the closing reception awards were presented to those who raced in the Turnabout Races and Open Races. Results of the Turnabout races have been reported previously. The Hendricks Head Open Race was won by Chris Jacobs, The Mark Island by Chris Jacobs and The Donaldson Season cup Chris Jacobs. The final “coveted” awards were announced by the originator of this spoof, Jon Smith. The “Golden Shackle Award” and its honorable mentions are given to a member with a less than distinguished performance in and around the water. Understand! No one is immune from receiving this as several former commodores and sailing instructors will attest.
On a sad note, we learned of the passing of Robin Farrin. She worked with her mother Norma Smith for many years as a sailing instructor. Our sympathies are extended to Pat Farrin and their sons.
