Boothbay Harbor Selectmen

Town takes over Windjammer Fireworks Fund

At the November 12 Boothbay Harbor Selectmen's meeting, the selectmen agreed to take over care of the Windjammer Day fireworks.

The Boothbay Region Chamber of Commerce had sent a letter to the town requesting they take over the fireworks management, since the chamber is no longer spearheading the Windjammer Days efforts.

Selectman Denise Griffin agreed that it would be easy for the town to take over, especially since they took care of the Fourth of July fireworks. She was concerned about fundraising, however.

“The municipality is not, and should not, be involved in fundraising efforts. That's not our place,” Griffin said.

According the Chamber of Commerce Executive Director Catherine Fossett, all the fundraising will be done by a committee led by local business-owner Dianne Gimbel. All money will be raised the same as before, with donations from the community and the towns contributing.

“The only difference is that town will handle the logistics. They will deal with the pyrotechnic company, the fire marshal, the harbor master, and will handle the money once it's been raised. It makes sense to have the town in charge since the fireworks take place in the harbor,” Fossett said.

“The town will not fundraise. They will simply facilitate. This is a positive change,” Fossett said.

The selectmen voted to accept the proposal with three votes, including Board Chairman Bill Hamblen, selectmen Griffin and Jay Warren. Selectmen Robert Splaine and Russ Hoffman were not in attendance.
