At 8:14 p.m. on July 19 Lincoln County Emergency Communication received a 911 call for a motor vehicle rollover with serious injuries at 481 Back Narrows Road in Boothbay.

Boothbay Fire & Rescue Chief David Pratt was first on the scene arriving at 8:18 p.m. and immediately established Incident command. It was quickly determined that the early model Porsche convertible with a Maine license plate had overturned, completely trapping the driver.

Boothbay’s Heavy Rescue 1 arrived on scene, with firefighters utilizing the Rescue’s advanced extrication capabilities – Jaws of Life, vehicle blocking, stabilization and other safety equipment - to raise the car off the ground and then cut critical pieces of the car, allowing for the extrication of the driver.

Boothbay Region Ambulance Service crews provided patient care, and due to the severity of the driver’s injuries, the decision was made to LifeFlight the driver to Portland ‘s Maine Medical Center for additional treatment. The patient was transported from the scene to Boothbay Region High School, where LifeFlight landed, and the patient was transferred to the helicopter and readied for transport to Portland.

Boothbay Harbor Fire established the LifeFlight landing zone and provided emergency support operations for helicopter operations at the high school athletic field.

The extent of the driver’s injuries is not known at this time.

Boothbay Engine 1, Engine 2, and Utility 2 were on the scene and provided additional emergency support and traffic control.

Boothbay Fire Chief David Pratt said “Given the rollover and the fact that the car was a convertible, firefighters had to execute a complex extrication procedure, and worked together as an integrated team with Boothbay Region Ambulance crews. Consequently, we were able to get the patient extricated from the car and quickly transported to the LifeFlight.”

Lincoln Country Sheriff’s accident reconstruction team was called in to further investigate the crash, and deputies at the scene used a drone to provide overhead analysis and pictures to aid in the accident investigation process.

Due to the complexity and seriousness of the accident scene, Back Narrows Road remained closed for over three hours, reopening at approximately 11:15 p.m.

The crash is currently under investigation by the Lincoln County Sheriff's Office.
