Last week, we welcomed Tom Verde, author of “In A Class All Their Own: Unique and Historic Boats of New England." Tom gave us a delightful talk on some of the classic boats of New England. His book developed from a weekly column he used to write highlighting boats and their related stories. He took us on an exploration of some of these unique boats through these stories, photos and videos. From the early canoes handmade by Indigenous people to the first wooden boats and then to the use of fiberglass materials.
He loves that each boat carries amazing stories. He entertained us with several including the Klang II, an English sailing yawl, which though she sank at one point was rescued and now lives in New Jersey. the Annie, the Neptune, the Rainbow…. Stories of boats “cursed” to sink and fail at every turn just to be rescued or upright again! Tom sells his books online and they are awaiting anyone wanting to continue this “Cinderella” boat story. Dive right in.
This Thursday is Oktoberfest. There will be beer tasting and German music and food. There will be games to test your skill, wit and patience. Another chance to try to win at the famous English game of “Splat the Rat” (a disclaimer:no actual rats are injured). Dig out your dirndl skirt or lederhosen, there will be fabulous prizes for best costume. Bring your family and friends. They don't want to miss a chance to wear German clothes, eat German food and play silly games invented by the British.
