Boothbay boys win three more, now 9-1
After suffering an opening night loss to Dirigo, the Boothbay Region High School boys Seahawk basketball team has gone on to win nine in a row and are currently seeded in first place in the Heal standings.
The most recent win came on January 13 when the Seahawks cruised to a 79-36 victory over the Mountain Valley Falcons (1-9) at Porter Memorial. The Seahawks Evan Hepburn scored eight of his game-high 20 points in the first four minutes during a 13-1 start that the Falcons would never recover from. Hepburn's first hoop of the night came on a steal from Joe DiMauro and his next came on a three-pointer before finishing the early run with a steal that Hepburn turned into a three-point play.
The Seahawks got six points from John Hepburn who finished with 18 points early in the second quarter as Boothbay continued to play stingy defense and run up tempo at will and built the lead to 23 at the break (44-21). Julian Aponte and Nick Gorey each added 10 points for the Seahawks.
On Wednesday, Jan. 8 the Seahawks played their most competitive game of the week as they defeated the Hall-Dale Bulldogs, 56-44, in a game that was much closer than the final score indicates. The Seahawks jumped out to a 6-0 lead on a put back from Joe DiMauro that came on a steal from Andrew Hallinan followed by a steal and score from John Hepburn and a hoop coming on an out of bounds play. The visiting Bulldogs would score the final six points of the first quarter including a buzzer beater by Ryan Sinclair to trail by just one after eight minutes.
The Seahawks continued to run the fast break set up from great defense and good work on the defensive glass. After three free throws from Hall-Dale cut the lead to two, the Seahawks scored the final three of the half including a hoop from Evan Hepburn that was set up by a steal from DiMauro to lead 23-18.
The Bulldogs got two quick hoops to start the third quarter and tied the score at 24 on a put back by Camp. Sensing the urgency, the Seahawks got back to the basics and went on a 9-0 run. The Bulldogs would close the gap to eight early in the third quarter on a hoop by Allen but a three-point play by Evan Hepburn sparked an 8-2 run that put the game away.
Evan Hepburn led the scoring with 19 points to go along with six rebounds. Hallinan added 12 points to go along with his eight assists. John Hepburn chipped in with eight points and grabbed 10 rebounds.
Playing their third game in four nights, the Seahawks jumped out to an 11-4 first quarter lead and went on to a 72-47 victory at Madison on Friday, January 10. After a slow start that saw the clubs tied at four apiece, Andrew Hallinan scored inside followed by a three-pointer by Evan Hepburn and a follow up by Aaron Dickinson as the Seahawks went up 11-4. Leading by nine at the break the Seahawks outscored their host 46-30 in the second half.
Andrew Hallinan and John Hepburn led the Seahawks with 15 points apiece with Hallinan also grabbing nine rebounds. Abel Bryer pulled down 10 rebounds.
