Lady Seahawks junior varsity having a strong season
The Boothbay Region Lady Seahawks junior varsity basketball team, as of January 26, has gone 8-3 on the season with three games to play.
The junior varsity is coached by first-year coach Matt Brewer of Wiscasset. Brewer was a standout player for Wiscasset during his playing days. His eight-member squad includes three sophomores, Olivia Zaragozi, Nicole Rice and Genevieve Taylor, and five freshmen, Elisabeth Wright, Mackenzie Abbott, Angie Perkins, Alexis Welch and Victoria Rackliff.
The team's first win of the season was a 33-15 trouncing of Dirigo in the home and season-opener. Abbott and Welch each scored 10 points, while Perkins pitched in with nine.
The team's first loss was at Lisbon, 38-25. Abbott led Boothbay with 11 points.
The young Lady Seahawks then rattled off two easy wins. Boothbay defeated Monmouth 54-31 with Zaragozi (19 points), Perkins (14) and Abbott (13) leading the way. Three nights later at Mt. Abram, Boothbay defeated the Roadrunners, 49-17. Rice led Boothbay with 13 points, followed by Abbott and Perkins with 10 each.
The team's next two wins were hard-fought battles at home with Spruce Mountain and Wiscasset. The Lady Seahawks defeated the Phoenix, 43-37, and Wiscasset, 39-35. Zaragozi led Boothbay in scoring against Spruce Mountain with 13 points, followed by Rice with 10. Against Wiscasset, Abbott led the team with 14 points while Zaragozi had 13.
Two more wins by the young Lady Seahawks gave them a 7-1 record. At Carrabec, Abbott led Boothbay to a 49-36 win with a 24-point performance. Then, at home against the Hall-Dale Bulldogs, Boothbay held on to post a 35-31 win. Abbott scored 10 and Rice had eight in the victory.
The team's second and third losses followed, as Boothbay fell at Madison, 36-29, and at home to Mountain Valley, 29-23. Abbott led Boothbay with 10 points at Madison while Welch led the Lady Seahawks with 11 points against Mountain Valley.
Boothbay's eighth win was an overtime thriller, 42-41, at Oak Hill, as Coach Brewer had to work with a depleted squad due to illness. Junior Ashley Reed swung down from the varsity to help key the victory as she, Abbott and Rice, each scored 10 points. Abbott hit two free throws with 20 seconds to play to send the game into overtime and Zaragozi scored six of her eight points in the overtime period. Boothbay was in foul trouble late in the game and reserves Rackliff and Wright both played key roles in the win.
The junior varsity was scheduled to play at Hall-Dale on January 27 and at Wiscasset on January 30 before finishing the season at home against Oak Hill on Monday, Feb. 3.
