Seahawks fall to Freeport in season opener
In a regular season football debut that was delayed twice due to severe weather, the Seahawks led twice before coming up on the short end of an 18-14 decision against the Freeport Falcons at Sherman Field on August 31.
The host Seahawks put the first points of the 2012 season on the board early in the second period when Jason Maddocks scored from seven yards out to cap a 13-play drive, which started at Boothbay's 41-yard line. Jude Alamo ran the ball four times for 26 yards during the scoring drive and Maddocks rumbled for 16 yards to pick up a key first down on a play prior to the touchdown.
On the ensuing possession, the Falcons got a big pass completion on a third and 14 to move the ball inside the Boothbay 10-yard line. Three plays later Dan Burke scored from three yards out to tie the score with 6:48 left in the first half.
One of several key turnovers on the night for the Seahawks put them in a hole as they fumbled on their first play to turn the ball over to Freeport inside the 20-yard line. The Boothbay defense, which played very well all night, stopped the Falcons without a gain on first down. A holding penalty against the visitors on second down was followed by a 10-yard completion, before the Freeport quarterback, James Purday, scored from 10 yards out on a keeper to put the Falcons up 12-6.
Starting at their own 40-yard line with just under five minutes left in the half, the Seahawks picked up 10 yards on two carries from Cormac Miller and 10 more on a run from Jesse Peters. Four plays later, quarterback Julian Aponte connected with Miller for a 13-yard gain. With a first and goal from the nine-yard line, Aponte found Alamo in the back of the end zone for a touchdown. Aponte then completed the pass for the two-point conversion to Miller for the 14-12 lead.
Early in the third period after Boothbay had stopped a 12-play drive by Freeport, the Seahawks turned the ball over again on a fumble on the first play from scrimmage.
With the ball back, Freeport was sacked on the first down and two plays later the complexion of the game changed. Maddock recovered a fumble for Boothbay and took the ball all the way to the Freeport two-yard line, but on the first play for Boothbay another fumble was recovered by Freeport and returned 98 yards for the winning touchdown with 4:34 left in the third period.
An interception by the Seahawks Nick Kilgus in the fourth period gave the Boothbay one last opportunity but they failed to convert as time ran out.
The Seahawks hit the road for the next two weeks as they play at Old Orchard Beach on Friday and at Sacopee Valley the following Friday.
